Amadeus Deploys OpenShift by Red Hat as Foundation for Cloud-based Application Infrastructure

Strong interest in application containers and automation leads Amadeus to choose Red Hat’s cloud application platform offering

BOSTON - RED HAT SUMMIT -

Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT), the world's leading provider of open source solutions, today announced that global travel technology provider Amadeus is building its own highly available, self-service, automated cloud platform – Amadeus Cloud Services - on OpenShift Enterprise, Red Hat’s award-winning private cloud application platform.

Although we are still in the early stages of deployment, we have seen already that the flexibility of the OpenShift platform and the support we have received from Red Hat has allowed us to begin to take our application to the next level and expand it to a wider customer base.

Dietmar Fauser

vice president, architecture, quality and governance at Amadeus

Amadeus is a leading provider of advanced technology solutions for the global travel industry, serving customer groups including airlines, airports, hotels, rail, travel agencies, plus travel management companies.

Amadeus wanted to update the platform that connects all of these stakeholders, and that enables its travel industry customers to access content and travel tools from a single source.

Amadeus’ datacenter is based in Erding, Germany, and it processes more than 30,000 end-user transactions per second during peak operations. However with their data transaction demands exponentially increasing, many Amadeus customers wanted a travel application that could run on-site locally or be accessed through public, private or hybrid cloud platforms. To meet these requests from more than 12,000 infrastructure devices, Amadeus’ IT teams assessed various open source solutions for infrastructure architecture and design and application containers, ultimately selecting OpenShift Enterprise by Red Hat to begin creating and running a private cloud-based application designed to meet specific customer demands. Amadeus then selected OpenShift to build the Amadeus Cloud Services solution that they plan to gradually roll out to serve Amadeus’ travel industry customers.

Amadeus’ early interest in Docker and containerized applications also made OpenShift’s lightweight container architecture - which natively integrates Docker and Kubernetes and is fully supported by Red Hat - a good fit for their environment, and the open source community support around OpenShift also solidified the collaboration, with Amadeus engineers now contributing to the upstream OpenShift Origin community. This visibility into the OpenShift code allows Amadeus engineers to maximize existing resources by integrating and monitoring their existing middleware applications within the OpenShift platform. Amadeus is also able to use OpenShift’s automated recovery, scaling and capacity planning abilities to re-deploy applications when necessary, reducing the need to personally manage each of their infrastructure applications.

As part of the project, Amadeus is increasing availability of its leading-edge platform, while driving further reductions in latency at the same time. Once fully deployed, Amadeus also expects Amadeus Cloud Services to further streamline operations through automation while reducing the time to market for new services.
