Federated Disease Surveillance Using Agentic Architecture and GraphRAG
During simultaneous disease outbreaks in multiple countries around the world, our solution demonstrates how independent health systems can contribute to a unified response while maintaining data sovereignty and patient privacy. The challenge lies in harmonizing disparate data structures: Countries collect regional-level data using unique schemas, and data sharing laws are not always conducive to rapid learning and response. Our solution implements an agentic architecture where specialized agents manage distinct data requests, while a central agent aggregates insights for epidemiologists. Large Language Models (LLMs) serve as an interoperability layer, leveraging GraphRAG for enhanced contextual understanding and efficient training cycles. This approach enables: real-time pattern extraction across jurisdictions.; automated response coordination; privacy-preserving data analysis.; compliance with privacy regulations; and scalable integration of new data sources. The federated nature of our knowledge graphs ensures both training and inference adhere to governance requirements while providing public health agencies with actionable insights. This architecture demonstrates how advanced artificial intelligence (AI) techniques can bridge jurisdictional gaps in public health surveillance while maintaining security and sovereignty.
