Enterprise-ready virtualization

Red Hat® Enterprise Virtualization for Servers 3.1 is built on Red Hat Enterprise Linux®—trusted by thousands of organizations on millions of systems worldwide for mission-critical workloads. This proven enterprise-ready platform lets you extend the infrastructure you have to build for the future, all while maintaining the business continuity your organization demands.

The latest Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization functionality:

Platform

  • More scalability of guest virtual machines now provides support for up to 160 logical CPUs and up to 2TB of memory per virtual machine.
  • Updated RHEV Hypervisor supports the latest industry-standard processors from Intel and AMD, including the Intel Core i3, i5, and i7 CPUs—code named "Sandy Bridge—and the AMD 15h or Opteron G4 CPUs—code named "Bulldozer."

User Interface

  • Improved web administration portal delivers a fully HTML-based management interface, including the new integrated reporting dashboard that you can access from any HTML-compliant web browser.
  • Updated reporting dashboard is integrated into the main Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization Manager interface. It has an improved Jasper report engine that provides a wide range of detailed reports at the datacenter, cluster, host, and virtual machine level.
  • Enhanced user access management updates give administrators the ability to assign power users an individual quota for storage, CPU, and memory resources of the host or cluster.
  • Advanced Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization Manager offers an internationally localized graphical user interface in the top 6 global languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, and Simplified Chinese.
  • Includes improved command-line interface (CLI), extended API functionality and access rights, and a new Python-based software developer kit (SDK) for developers.

Networking

  • Hot-plug and unplug networking lets administrators conveniently attach or detach any virtual machine's network interface without interrupting the running virtual machine or users.

Disk Storage

  • Live snapshots let you quickly and easily preserve the live virtual machine state without interrupting users. This simplifies backup and reversion to a previous stateand is excellent for testing and development environments.
  • Storage live migration gives you the flexibility to migrate virtual machine disk files between storage domains without having to power down the virtual machine.
  • Integrated POSIX file system support delivers seamless integration with Red Hat Storage and similar file systems, like IBM GPFS. Also, the Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization Manager has a new storage management interface that allows a unified single point of management for the virtualization platform and the storage infrastructure.
  • An enhanced disk management interface provides added support for direct-attached logical unit number (LUN) disks, giving administrators comprehensive management over internal and external (direct-attached LUN) virtual machine disks—an important resource for intensive applications like SAP.
  • Hot-plug and unplug storage disks let administrators more easily attach or detach any virtual machine's disk without interrupting the running virtual machine or users. And administrators can now create floating storage disks, unassociated with any particular virtual machine, and attach it to any existing virtual machine of their choosing.
  • Shareable disks let administrators share a virtual machine's disk with 1 or more simultaneously running virtual machines. A common use case is to enable multiple applications running on different virtual servers to access the same file, database, or both from another virtual server.

VDI (RHEV for Desktops)

  • A new virtual desktop autostart policy lets administrators prestart a desired number of pooled desktop virtual machines to avoid boot storms from consuming cluster resources.
  • WAN improvements to the SPICE virtual desktop remote-rendering protocol expands the possibilities of users accessing remote desktops over a higher-latency, lower-bandwidth network connection.
  • An better virtual desktop SPICE client and updated guest virtual machine tools now deliver native integrated USB redirection via the SPICE protocol to Windows and Linux virtual desktops.
