Proprietary software vendors have sought to spread fear, uncertainty and doubt around the legal risk of using open source software. Often, these efforts are couched in vague statements about infringement of "intellectual property" and "balance sheet liabilities" without any details on what specific intellectual property right is being infringed. This session is designed to examine the specific legal concepts that make up "intellectual property", how those concepts apply to software (both proprietary and open source), and whether use of open source software creates any special risks for end users. Finally, the session outlines how Red Hat is working to protect all users of software from potential intellectual property infringement risks, as well as the indemnification and other assurance it provides its customers.
