Realtime Linux Kernel Features

Tim Burke

Historically, mention of Linux realtime conjures up images of small embedded device controllers running non-standard kernels. This talk will change your perceptions on realtime and why it is very relevant to a broad range of users. The presentation will describe the substantial, industry-leading, upstream Linux community. We will also preview our ongoing work towards productization in future Red Hat Enterprise Linux releases. You'll learn how many of these features are already broadly applicable today in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5. Virtualization, One Laptop Per Child, desktop, and messaging will also be highlighted. Lastly, we will describe representative business workloads (well beyond embedded devices) where realtime capabilities yield competitive advantage.
