Deepak B. Phatak, Subrao Nilekani Chair professor, Kanwal Rekhi School of Information Technology, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay

The Open Source movement has now established its roots firmly in the Indian sub continent. The Indian economy is now poised to grow very fast and therefore the IT infrastructure which will be built in the next decades has to be commensurate with the aspirations of people, industry and the government.

This talk presents the current scenario of Open Source in India and outlines the national strategy for building the Open Source movement such that the true potential of Open Source to unleash the creativity of the developer community will be realized in coming years. In this context each of the following three initiatives will be elaborated.

i)Building Open Source community through education and academia.

ii)Building a community of ISVs for development of application software which will work across different domains to fully exploit the service oriented Architecture, thus, e.g. exploiting components such as JBoss to work across heterogeneous hardware platforms ranging from low end servers to mainframes.

iii)Providing people-ready solutions with an emphasis on digital and financial inclusion using thin clients for delivery of applications to rural India. This will include work on e-Governance solutions, as well as solutions which buttress the village economy.
