Zmanda: Open Source Backup and Recovery

Chander Kant CEO, Zmanda

Every IT manager understands the importance of backing up corporate data. E-commerce applications, online communication, and paperless office initiatives make the need for protecting data against loss from human or computer errors a key IT requirement. Regulatory compliance requirements further enhance the need for a well defined and disciplined backup process.

Attendees of the Red Hat Summit are well aware of the benefits of using open source software in their environments. In the case of backup and archiving software, the advantages of using open source software include the ability to scale from small local environments to thousands of systems that are globally dispersed. In this session, we will also describe Zmanda Internet Backup, a unique backup and disaster recovery solution which uses storage grids such as Amazon S3 as the backup media (instead of traditional backup media such as tapes). This enables IT managers to benefit from the scalability and robustness of Amazon S3 for their backup storage. Open Source backup/recovery software also provides an increasing breadth and depth of data protection for a wide range of operating systems, databases and applications. Red Hat Enterprise Linux-based networks benefit from the heterogeneous approach provided by Zmanda's open source backup recovery software. Regardless of the IT environment, open source backup and recovery software should be a key element of any company’s data protection strategy.
