Oracle and Red Hat Collaborate to Develop Enhanced Enterprise Capabilites for Red Hat Linux Advanced Server

Joint Development Efforts Satisfy Growing Demand From Enterprise Customers

北卡罗来纳州罗利 -

Through Oracle's own Linux research and development, collaboration with Red Hat, and interaction with its large customer community, Oracle is bringing its enterprise software expertise to Linux. As a result, Oracle and Red Hat have enhanced the capabilities of Red Hat Linux Advanced Server running Oracle9i Database to provide customers with a total solution for enterprise Linux deployments.

Demand for high performance, information technology cost reduction and lower total cost of ownership provide a further catalyst for Oracle and Red Hat to work together to develop, test and improve Linux in the areas of performance, reliability, clustering and manageability, enabling the highest level of performance for enterprise applications running on Red Hat Linux Advanced Server. Red Hat will also include the Oracle9i Database in its development testing methodology, ensuring early validation and integration.

"One of the biggest reasons enterprise customers are moving to Linux-based systems is server consolidation to reduce resources required to purchase and maintain IT infrastructures," said Doug Kennedy, vice president of Platform Partnerships at Oracle Corporation. "Oracle and Red Hat plan to work closely together to deliver technical enhancements that our customers require, and we will give those enhancements to the open source community."

Optimized And Certified Database Technology for Linux-based Enterprises Red Hat Linux Advanced Server delivers Linux enhancements in the following key technology areas to satisfy database customer requirements:

  • Performance - The Linux kernel has been enhanced to improve performance by addressing I/O scalability, memory capacity, and scheduling of processes, allowing Oracle9i Database to fully utilize the system and memory resources, with at least a ten-fold increase in memory utilization capacity with the new Linux kernel enhancements.

  • Reliability - To improve the overall reliability and stability of the Oracle and Red Hat solution, Oracle9i Database was tested across a large spectrum of workloads, with the goal of improving resilience to handle resource shortages. A robust operating system must handle the tremendous demand of peak usage times without failure.

  • Manageability - Oracle and Red Hat are working together to create and enhance tools that will improve manageability of Oracle products on Red Hat Linux.

For the first time in Oracle's history, Oracle will also offer operating system frontline support for Red Hat Advanced Server. Oracle, in collaboration with Red Hat, will provide support for critical operating system issues to help ensure that joint customers' enterprise businesses enjoy reliable IT infrastructures. For additional support issues, Oracle and Red Hat will collaborate to determine the problem and solution, a commitment that underscores both companies confidence in Red Hat Linux for enterprise infrastructures (see accompanying release).

"Red Hat and Oracle are collaborating on the technical enhancements, development and testing of the operating system as it relates to database and application performance. We will deliver a new customer support model, which will enable customers to adopt Oracle on Red Hat Linux Advanced Server as an enterprise class platform," said Paul Cormier, executive vice president of Engineering at Red Hat. "Together, we will set the foundation for providing better and more efficient solutions to our customers, who can expect to receive better, faster problem escalation, resolution and support as a result of our joint efforts."
