Parrs Wood High School, the first school to be opened this millennium, has chosen Red Hat Linux as the operating system upon which the entire school will run. Based in Manchester, Parrs Wood is one of the first new City Learning Centres as part of the Government?s initiative to provide local communities with access to information technology within schools. It is also the only school in the UK to have digital TV access, with its Website available through digital TV.
With Internet access in every classroom, Parrs Wood will offer its 1,800 students unparallelled information technology advantages. There will be video conference links to seven other European schools, enabling students to talk to their counterparts, plus remote technology allowing all local primary schools to be electronically linked to the library and technology laboratories.
Head Teacher Iain Hall commented: ?We are delighted to be launching phase one of Parrs Wood school today with the support of Red Hat. Red Hat Linux enables educational institutions to save money and broaden the opportunities of information technology to all schools - something to which we are committed as an organisation. It also offers better performance than can be achieved with traditional operating systems.?
Colin Tenwick, VP and General Manager, Red Hat Europe, said: ?Parrs Wood is a technology-first in terms of its positive commitment to the application of information technology and Red Hat is pleased to be able to support this extremely innovative school. Red Hat Linux is the ideal operating system for education, enabling schools to enjoy the benefits of a stable, problem-free system without disruption and downtime.
?We see new technology as underpinning education and we aim to provide schools like Parrs Wood with the software services and support to create sustainable learning environments for the future.?
