Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) has a storied history, standing at the intersection of our customers, communities and partners, helping each achieve their goals while answering key end user needs, from enterprise-grade development practices and system security enhancements to a stronger software supply chain and end-to-end support backed by Red Hat’s unique expertise..

In 2021 we announced no-cost RHEL options for developers, in certain use cases, which include our proactive analytic capability, Red Hat Insights. Since then, we have listened to and learned from individuals and organizations and have evolved our offerings to meet a broader set of needs.

For Individuals

Our Developer Subscription for Individuals is applicable for all use cases. For individuals with 16 systems or less, this provides no-cost, self-supported RHEL. Creating a developer account is a simple process of providing a valid email address or logging in via single-sign on (SSO) from  GitHub, Twitter, Facebook and other providers. No sales activities are attached to this information, it just provides a means of contact to help manage updates and your subscription. Systems based on these subscriptions can be run on prem or in most major cloud providers including  AWS, Google Cloud Platform and Microsoft Azure. For any cloud provider or hosting services, you would only pay for the underlying virtual machine (VM) while retaining all of the benefits of RHEL.

Please note that this subscription is explicitly not for corporate or otherwise non-individual use.

For Red Hat Customers

RHEL Developer Subscription for Teams

Each of our customers has their own approach to development, quality assurance and testing  systems. When we meet with our customers, we stress that it is critical to understand the impacts of decisions, such as choosing a self support model, which may lead to reduced systems availability and potentially reduced associate productivity. We also stress the importance of consistent environments, so that what works in dev/test will also work “as intended” on production systems. This helps maintain the operational efficiency of your environment through consistent management practices and environments. Finally, all of us should be considering the powerful advantages Red Hat Insights brings to any environment, proactively identifying issues, helping to optimize performance, identifying and quantifying potential security risks and driving greater consistency and compliance throughout your protected systems.

With this in mind we believe it is important to provide options that work for our customers. Our account teams understand the nuances of these situations and are ready to help you evaluate whether it is appropriate to mix a certain level of unsupported no-cost RHEL into your environment and to help you do so in many cases. If you would like to explore this option further and find out if your organization qualifies, please contact your Red Hat or partner representative for a discussion.

When enabled, these subscriptions can be utilized wherever you are using RHEL today, whether that’s on bare metal or virtualized in your own datacenter, through a hosting facility or on a cloud provider. You can do this with any of our supported hardware platforms from ARM to IBM Z. The details behind what activities this offering covers can be found in the article What qualifies for Red Hat Developer Subscription for Teams?

If you are a Red Hat Partner, or thinking of becoming one, please see our recent press release on Red Hat Partner Subscriptions.

Developer Support Options

For customers actively developing their own code we offer two levels of developer support so that they and their teams can gain the greatest benefit from their talent and time on the most trusted release of Linux. More on this can be found on our Red Hat Enterprise Linux Developer Support page.

Red Hat’s operating system offerings

Almost everything we do is open source from the intake of code, to the processes we use to refine and harden it, to what we give back to the community and what we deliver to our customers. Along that path we work with three Linux offerings that meet a variety of needs:

  • Fedora The upstream project on which future Red Hat Enterprise Linux major releases are based. This is where significant operating system (OS) innovations are introduced..
  • CentOS Stream is the continuously delivered platform that becomes the next minor release of RHEL.
  • RHEL is the intelligent operating system for production workloads, used in nearly every industry in the world, from cloud-scale deployments in mission-critical data centers and localized server rooms to public clouds and out to far-flung edges of enterprise networks.

At Red Hat we take pride in helping people accomplish their objectives in ways that we all know and in some that are not always that well known. For instance…no-cost RHEL for developers
