Red Hat introducirá soporte de virtualización en su oferta

El suministrador de Linux Red Hat está integrando tecnologías de virtualización Xen en la próxima versión de su sistema operativo Linux. Además, trabaja con sus socios en diversas áreas para facilitar el despliegue de virtualización.

Red Hat proporcionará una primera entrega de su visión de las tecnologías de virtualización con el lanzamiento de Fedora Core 5 este mismo mes. Pronto, además, la compañía lanzará una versión beta de Red Hat Enterprise Linux, en la que también se integrarán capacidades de virtualización, y diversos servicios para facilitar la migración, valoración y planificación de entornos virtualizados. Antes de finalizar el año, introducirá la versión 5 de Red Hat Enterprise Linux, que también incorporará capacidades de virtualización.

Además, la compañía está trabajando con algunos partners para ayudar a sus clientes a introducir la virtualización a través de toda la estructura TI. Entre las compañías con las que colabora en este objetivo se encuentran los fabricantes de chips AMD e Intel, así como algunos suministradores de almacenamiento –incluido Network Appliance- y XenSource, que distribuye y soporta la tecnología de virtualización de código abierto Xen.

“En realidad la virtualización no es algo nuevo, sino que se remonta a los tiempos del mainframe. Lo realmente novedoso es la introducción de tecnologías de código abierto basadas en Xen en las plataformas de código abierto Linux”, asegura Tim Yeaton, vicepresidente ejecutivo de soluciones empresariales de Red Hat.

Un mejor aprovechamiento del hardware, la reducción del consumo de potencia y la disminución de los costes de la gestión de sistemas son sólo algunas de las ventajas de los entornos virtualizados, según Yeaton.

Novell, principal competidor de Red Hat en el mercado Linux, también está integrando capacidades de virtualización en su oferta de Linux para empresas, denominada Suse Linux Enterprise Server.
