Red Hat commits to modernizing education system in India

Red Hat partners with Hyderabad based Lotus Learning Systems Society to promote open source in education

-
Red Hat (NASDAQ: RHAT), the world's leading provider of open source to the enterprise, today announced their partnership with the Lotus Learning Systems Society to promote open source in education in schools. The initiative is part of Red Hat's commitment to modernize the Indian education systems by promoting learning through IT and usage of open source technology as a platform for learning.

The Hyderabad based Lotus Learning Systems Society, an organization established to provide world- class professional teacher development and establishing & operating educational institutions, will deploy Red Hat's open source programs in Lotus National Schools - a chain of schools promoted by Lotus Learning Systems Society educating students from K-12. Whether it is to teach, learn or develop, Red Hat will empower the school teachers and students with affordable, reliable open source technology.

Javed Tapia, President, Red Hat Indian Subcontinent, said, "With open source software, we can modernize the education system far more rapidly than we can with proprietary software. Open source gives schools flexibility and control over their IT infrastructure and freedom from expensive licensing schemes. Open source also helps in building a participative community of educationists and technologists. It is therefore, the way forward, for India's education system and we are pleased to partner with a progressive organization like Lotus Learning Systems Society to take this initiative forward."

Red Hat India recognizes the need of modernization of Indian education systems as one of the major challenges for India to become a global superpower. To this effect, it is aggressively promoting the use of open source software as the cost effective and versatile medium.

Smt. K. Renuka Raju, Founder - correspondent, Lotus Learning Systems Society says, "Our curriculum uses technology as a delivery system and gives students the skills they need to work in a progressive environment. She further said, "Good education must be both, convenient and affordable to access. Without IT, we cannot modernize India's education system. Our partnership with Red Hat is a joint initiative to modernize the Indian education system using open source software. With open source software, teachers can modify the source code to suit their pedagogical requirements."

The open source software model is based on collaboration, community and sharing of intellectual resources and can effectively promote learning and innovation through IT. Open source software is easily available and schools can easily incorporate IT in their curriculum with low cost of capital. Red Hat India is encouraging learning and adoption of open source technology at schools, educational institutes and universities.

To further promote open source software, Red Hat introduced a yearly Red Hat Scholarships program - an education initiative designed to encourage innovative software development in open source. Launched in 2004-2005, Red Hat Scholarships program saw participation from Linux enthusiasts across India, including Mumbai, Manipal, Coimbatore, Bangalore, Noida and Pune. In the end, thirty-three students received the prestigious Red Hat Scholarships Awards in 2004-2005.

Red Hat also recognizes the role of academia in developing skills and talent for the future for a rapid uptake of open source technologies. To ensure that the ecosystem for open source software continues to grow, Red Hat has developed course content and certification programs that have been recognized as the leading open source education programs.
