양 사는 레드햇의 사무소 세 곳에 대규모 센터를 마련하오 소규모의 위성 센터도 14개소에 개설한다고 발표했다. 프로그래머는 이 시설을 사용해 자신이 개발한 소프트웨어가 가상화 기술과 같은 최신의 기능과 연동되는지 확인할 수 있게 된다. 가상화 기술이란 머신의 효율화를 도모하기 위해 여러 개의 운영체제를 동시에 1대의 컴퓨터상에서 동작시키는 기술로 일반적으로 고객들이 이용할 수 없는 하드웨어나 소프트웨어가 사용되고 있다고 인텔의 더크 혼델(Dirk Hohndel, 리눅스 및 오픈 소스 전략 담당 디렉터)은 말했다.
“소규모의 판매 업체에게는 발표전의 하드웨어와 기존의 OS의 수정 버전을 얻기 어렵다”고 혼델은 보스턴에서 개최중인 리눅스월드 컨프런스 엑스에서 말했다. “이것은 앞으로 나올 최신의 뛰어난 기술을 동작시키기 위한 직접적인 솔루션이다”고 했다.
또 양 사는 레드햇의 「Global File System」의 지원에도 중점을 둘 것이라고 레드햇의 브렛 헌터(Bret Hunter, 파트너 마케팅 담당 디렉터)는 말했다.
이번 발표된 것 같은 시설의 개설은 컴퓨터 업계에서는 드문 것은 아니다. 하지만 이것은 리눅스 개발 관련의 시장이 서서히 성숙하고 있다는 것을 나타내고 있다. 리눅스가 한창 성장했던 시기에는 하드웨어 관련의 최신 기능의 지원에 대해 리눅스가 윈도우보다 몇 개월 늦곤 했었다.
그러나 인텔은 현재 리눅스의 친부모인 리누스 토발즈(Linus Torvalds)와 같은 리눅스 프로그래머에게 최첨단의 개발 환경을 제공하려고 하고 있다. 혼텔은 인텔은 다음 분기에 발표할 차세대 노트 북 PC용 듀얼 코어 프로세서에 대해 “리누스는 현재 「메롬(Merom)」기반의 시스템을 사용하고 있고 몹시 마음에 들어한다”고 말했다.
혼델에 의하면 레드햇의 소프트웨어 센터에는 차세대 서버용 프로세서 「우드크레스트(Woodcrest)」를 탑재하는 서버가 설치된다고 한다. 그리고 이러한 시스템이 인텔의 「Input/Output Acceleration」기술로 불리는 기능을 탑재해서 출시될 때, RHEL는 현재 버전의 업데이트 버전으로 그 기능을 지원할 것이다.
몇 개의 인텔 프로세서는 가상화를 쉽게 하는 기능을 지원하고 있고, 현재의 분기에는 이 기술을 보다 광범위한 시장에 내놓기 위해 주류의 서버를 지원한다. 인텔과 경쟁하는 AMD는 가상화 기술에 관해서 뒤지고 있지만, 「AMD-V」라는 같은 기능을 리눅스월드 컨퍼런스 엑스포에서 시연했다. 이 기능을 지원하는 칩은 몇 개월 이내에 발표될 예정이다.
올 해 중에 등장할 예정인 「Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5」나 경쟁하는 「SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 10」(금년여름에 등장 예정)은 각각 젠(Xen) 소프트웨어를 탑재하고, 가상화 기술을 지원할 것이다.
