하나TV 성공의 숨은 공로자 "레드햇 GFS"

하나로텔레콤이 지난해 7월 말 선보인 IP 기반 통신ㆍ방송 융합 서비스인 하나TV는 현재까지 예약가입자를 포함해 20여만명의 가입자를 확보하는 놀라운 성과를 거두고 있다. 수만편의 다양한 콘텐츠를 원하는 시간에 마음대로 볼 수 있고, 고화질 디지털 영상과 5.1채널의 고음질을 제공하는 점이 소비자들의 마음을 사로잡은 것이다.


하나TV는 통상적인 영상 콘텐츠 전송방식인 스트리밍 방식을 채택하지 않았다. 사용자가 요청할 경우 스트리밍 서버에 올려진 콘텐츠를 온라인 상에서 재생해주는 스트리밍 방식이 네트워크의 상황에 따라 서비스 품질이 좌우돼 고품질의 콘텐츠의 안정적인 서비스가 생명인 하나TV에 적합하지 않았기 때문이다. 대신 하나TV는 FTP(File Transfer Protocol)를 통한 다운로드 방식을 콘텐츠 전송 방식으로 채택해 사용자가 다운로드를 하면서, 동시에 콘텐츠를 재생해서 시청하거나 일단 셋톱박스에 저장한 뒤 원하는 때에 시청해 안정적으로 고품질의 영상 콘텐츠를 즐길 수 있게 했다.

하나TV의 콘텐츠는 스토리지로부터 FTP 서버를 거쳐 네트워크를 통해 사용자의 셋톱박스로 전송되는데, 이 때 보다 빠르고 안정적으로 서비스를 하기 위해 스토리지와 FTP 서버간의 통신, FTP 서버간의 원활한 작업량 분배가 중요하다.

이를 위해 하나TV는 8노드의 FTP 서버를 구축하고, 이들을 여러 대의 서버를 한 대처럼 통합 운용할 수 있어 시스템 가용성과 함께 자원 활용을 극대화할 수 있는 클러스터 파일 시스템으로 연계해 8노드의 서버가 하나의 자원처럼 운용되도록 구성했다. 그런데 8노드의 FTP 서버 중 한 대에 에러가 발생할 경우 나머지 7대의 서버마저 중단되는 문제점이 발생했다.

가입자와 콘텐츠 증가 추세에 따라 서버 증설이 필요해진 하나TV는 지난해 10월 15노드의 FTP를 추가 증설하면서 기존 솔루션 대신 레드햇의 GFS를 새로운 클러스터 파일 시스템으로 채택, 적용했다. 공유 가능한 노드 수가 가장 많고, 공유 가능한 디스크 볼륨에 제한이 없으며, 온라인에서의 우수한 볼륨 증설 능력을 입증한 테스트 결과 등이 높은 평가를 받았다.

레드햇 GFS 도입 이후 지금까지 서비스가 중단된 사례가 없다. 에러가 발생한 시스템을 공유된 자원에서 자동으로 제거하는 GFS의 오토 펜싱(Auto Fencing) 기능이 제 역할을 해준 덕분에 사소한 시스템 에러가 서비스 중단으로 이어지지 않았던 것. 또 서비스 속도의 큰 영향을 미치는 스토리지와 FTP 간의 트랜잭션은 6Gbps의 높은 트래픽 처리속도를 기록하고 있다.

황성환 팀장은 "현재 사용하는 클러스터 파일 시스템은 문제가 발생할 경우 대응능력이 우수할 뿐만 아니라 확장이 용이한 점이 만족스럽다"고 말했다.

가입자가 늘고 있을 뿐만 아니라 곧 노래방, 운세, 교통정보 서비스 등 다양한 부가서비스를 새롭게 선보일 계획이어서 클러스터 파일 시스템의 중요성은 더욱 높아질 전망이다. 황성환 팀장은 "가입자가 급증하고 다양한 부가서비스가 추가될 예정인 만큼 올해 지속적으로 클러스터 파일 시스템을 확장할 계획"이라고 말했다.

GFS는 하나TV 외에도 대표적인 도메인ㆍ호스팅 기업인 가비아에 공급돼 한대의 서버에서 처리해야 하는 업무를 실시간으로 다른 메일 서버로 나눠 처리할 수 있게 지원했다. 이를 통해 효율적으로 부하를 분산, 시스템 운영의 안정성을 높여 최근 국내에도 도입이 확대되고 있다.

양승도 과장은 "레드햇 GFS는 최대 256노드의 레드햇 엔터프라이즈 리눅스(RHEL) 운영체제(OS) 탑재 서버가 스토리지영역네트워크(SAN)의 단일 공유 파일 시스템을 동시에 읽고 쓸 수 있게 해 성능이 향상되고 중복된 데이터 사본 관리로 인한 복잡성과 오버헤드가 줄어든다"며 "특히 OS와 파일 시스템의 관계가 매우 밀접해 시스템의 안정성과 기술적 신뢰성이 높다"고 말했다.
