레드햇이 주최하는 이번 행사는 ‘오픈, 쉐어, 쉬프트(Open, Share, Shift)’ 라는 주제하에 국내 오픈 소스 산업의 발전을 논의하기 위해 마련되었다. 본 심포지엄에서는 국내외 주요 IT 업체들의 오픈 소스에 관한 기술 동향과 활용사례를 다룰 예정이며 대기업 고객을 비롯, 중소기업 관계자 및 오픈 소스 개발자, 사용자들이 대거 참석한다.
특히 이번 ‘2009 오픈 소스 심포지엄’에는 11월 12일부터 1박 2일간 한국을 방한하는 레드햇 짐 화이트 허스트 사장이 기조 연설자로 참여, 한국에서 "오 픈소스 협력 혁신 (Open Source Collaborative Innovation, 이하 OSCI)" 정책을 발표한다. 본 정책은 레드햇이 오픈 소스 글로벌 커뮤니티의 협력 혁신을 도모하기 위해, 2008년 아시아 태평양 지역에서 처음으로 시작했다. 현재 호주, 중 국, 인도, 말레이시아, 싱가폴 등에서 OSCI가 진행되고 있다.
이어서 ‘공개 소프트웨어 공정이용 환경 조성을 위한 정부 정책과 전망’, ‘한국 오픈 소스 소프트웨어 및 관련 서비스 현황 및 전망’에 대한 일반 세션이 진행된다.
오후 세션에서는 가상화(Virtualization), 비 즈니스(Business), 기술(Technical)의 3가지 트랙으로 나뉘어 진행되며 참가하고자 하는 IT 관리자 및 개발자들은 관심 분야에 따라 희망하는 트랙을 신청해 들을 수 있다. 특히 오후 첫 번째 세션에서는 레드햇 아태지역 제품 총괄 수석 책임자인 프랭크 필더만이 최근 출시된 '레드햇 엔터프라이즈 가상화(Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization for Servers, 이하 RHEV)'를 소개하는 시간이 마련될 예정이다.
