Konkuk University Medical Center Builds Next-Gen Medical Information System with Red Hat Technologies

Improves medical system efficiency with innovative IT

Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT), the world's leading provider of open source solutions, today announced the completion of a next-gen medical information system at Konkuk University Medical Center (KUMC) based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform (JBoss EAP).

KUMC worked with Red Hat Consulting and local open source consulting company Open Naru to first evaluate the feasibility of its open source initiative. Following this, KUMC conducted the project to switch its medical information system. The decision to improve the outdated system based on UNIX and Java TM  was made with a goal of gaining the flexibility to connect to external organizations’ systems and solving issues related to performance and system errors.

KUMC switched its medical information system to open source and changed the system architecture to a modern microservice architecture. It divided the system into microservices and structured customized applications by tasks so that its staff should not experience system load. KUMC solved the performance issue of the previous system’s services, irrelevant of work, that slowed down when the concurrent users’ requests passed over 200 TPS (transaction per second) with the deployment of 24 instances of Red Hat JBoss EAP and gained the scalability to be able to handle concurrent users of different roles in the hospital.

Through switching the system, based on its internal benchmarks, KUMC reports that it has experienced the following benefits:

  • Removed the bottleneck in the system and improved service reliability
  • Achieved three times faster response times
  • Reduced service reboot time from 40 minutes to 80 seconds, even with 24 instances, which is three times as many instances compared to the previous system
  • Reduced maintenance costs to just 20 percent of the prior solution’s maintenance costs
