5 common tasks: Research into how automation speeds up system management

System administrators spend over half of their time performing routine management tasks—repeatedly. As IT infrastructures become more complex and distributed across cloud and physical environments, performing these tasks consistently becomes more time-consuming and difficult.

Red Hat^® Insights provides a single management dashboard that can quickly set up configuration and patching rules, apply them across physical and cloud servers, and provide visual monitoring and notifications of multiple systems—and Insights is already included with every Red Hat Enterprise Linux^® subscription.

We wanted to test how efficient Insights could make administrators by measuring how much it can speed up common administrative tasks. Working with researchers and Linux administrators at Principled Technologies, we identified a set of core tasks and tracked the number of steps and overall time to set up common administrative jobs, both manually and using Red Hat Insights.
