Powering Europe's digital future with open source

The European Union is at a critical juncture, driving towards a future that is both digitally sovereign and economically competitive. For over 30 years, Red Hat has proven to be a dedicated partner in this journey, providing the open source technologies and expertise necessary to achieve the EU's modernisation goals.

From pivoting towards open source and onward to further enhancing cybersecurity and fostering innovation in AI, we are committed to helping the EU build a secure, transparent, and prosperous digital society.

Artificial Intelligence

Driving AI Innovation in the EU

Trusted AI for Europe: Ethical. Accountable. Innovative.

Our solutions are specifically designed to enable the development of transparent and explainable AI applications. This capability directly supports the core principles of the forthcoming EU AI Act, ensuring that AI systems are understandable, accountable, and reliable.

By providing the foundational technology for modern digital initiatives, Red Hat fosters innovation in high-impact areas like AI Factories, helping the EU maintain its competitive edge and commitment to responsible technological advancement.

Digital Sovereignty

Enabling EU Digital Sovereignty

Sovereignty starts here. Open source for Europe.

Enabling EU Digital Sovereignty “Sovereignty starts here. Open source for Europe.”
As a cornerstone partner in realizing the European Union's 2026 roadmap for tech sovereignty, Red Hat’s open hybrid cloud strategy provides EU institutions with the essential autonomy, control, and choice they require. This approach enables seamless data management across on-premise and multi-cloud environments, specifically engineered to eliminate vendor lock-in and ensure strategic independence.

On 3 June 2026, in a major shift in its approach to technology, the European Commission adopted an ambitious set of measures to bolster the EU's digital autonomy.
Red Hat’s commitment directly bolsters critical EU initiatives, such as Horizon Europe and the Sovereign Tech Fund, ensuring agencies maintain absolute control over their digital infrastructure. By aligning with the Commission's latest mandates for resilient, independent tech stacks, Red Hat solutions are expertly designed to help institutions navigate these stringent new regulatory requirements.

Green IT

Go Green: Supporting a Climate-Neutral Digital Europe

Turn mandatory compliance into operational advantage.

Data centres now consume approximately 3% of the EU’s electricity. To meet this challenge, Red Hat provides the open-source software foundation to help you achieve mandatory Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) compliance while hitting your IT sustainability goals.

  • Expand the Platform: We extend platforms like Red Hat OpenShift for Resource-Optimized Infrastructure, dynamically managing workloads and consolidating resources to reduce idle energy waste. We also enable Sovereign AI, empowering users to route tailored AI models to efficient CPUs, bypassing power-hungry GPUs when massive processing isn't strictly necessary.
  • Contribute to Advance Methodology: We align with the open-source community to collect power consumption data and report on CO2 emissions through Real-Time Telemetry (project Kepler) and an Open Data Commons (OS-Climate initiative) tailored for complex sustainability data ingestion and regulatory reporting.
  • Partner to Build Solutions: We collaborate with industry leaders to deliver a Hardware & Efficiency Ecosystem that fights technical obsolescence, and we champion Circular Energy Integration by orchestrate workloads in facilities capable of waste heat valorisation to drastically improve the Energy Reuse Factor (ERF).

Empowering the Next Generation of European IT Leaders

Empower your workforce. Build a skilled, sovereign Europe.

The digital skills gap is a critical priority for Europe's future. To meet the goals of the EU's Digital Decade, we're actively supporting the next generation of IT talent.

By training the workforce in open source, we ensure Europe’s digital future is built on standard, interoperable technologies rather than proprietary lock-in.

True European digital sovereignty cannot be built behind closed doors. From RHEL to Red Hat OpenShift AI, we rely on the transparency of open source to deliver inherently secure, deeply verifiable systems. By aggressively integrating post-quantum cryptography (PQC), we are taking that commitment further—future-proofing Europe’s sovereign infrastructure against the threats of tomorrow.
