The highly anticipated showdown between Red Hat CTO Michael Tiemann and Microsoft Senior Vice President Craig Mundie, "Shared Source vs. Open Source," will take place in the form of speeches and a wide-open panel discussion where they will square off against one another.

Red Hat is the undisputed leader in open source solutions. According to IDC, Linux was the fastest-growing server operating environment in 1998, 1999, and 2000, and Linux shipments increased more than 24 percent from 1999-2000, capturing 27 percent of the server operating system market and outpacing even Microsoft's growth during that period. A 2001 Netcraft survey also found that Linux is used for more public Web servers than any other non-Windows operating system--29 percent in total.

The speeches from Tiemann and Mundie will be followed by a panel discussion with additional experts on intellectual property and the software industry, moderated by Tim O'Reilly. The event will take place on Thursday, July 26 from 8:45-10:15 a.m. at the O'Reilly Open Source Convention and Perl Conference 5 at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina, Grande Ballrooms ABC.
