Managing a hybrid cloud environment spanning on-premise data centers, edge deployments, and multiple public clouds often results in subscription sprawl. Even in simpler environments, it can be challenging to maintain clear visibility into subscription use. Organizations frequently struggle to answer a basic question: “Exactly how much of our purchased Red Hat capacity are we actually using right now?”

Subscription watch is the solution to this complexity. It is a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) tool integrated into Red Hat Hybrid Cloud Console that provides a unified, aggregated view of your subscription usage and capacity.

A simple onboarding journey to visibility

Getting your data into subscription watch is simple and can be performed within your existing Red Hat environment. Depending on how systems are deployed and managed, subscription usage data can reach subscription watch through several ingestion paths.

Registering core systems

For Red Hat Enterprise Linux, visibility begins with registration. When you register your systems using insights-client or Red Hat Subscription Manager, those clients push system metadata in a security-centric manner to Hybrid Cloud Console. Subscription watch de-duplicates data drawn from multiple sources so that individual servers aren’t counted twice, providing a high-fidelity inventory count.

Automated metering for managed services

For cloud-native services like Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS, subscription watch acts as a meter by automatically tracking daily resource consumption, such as worker node vCPUs and control plane usage. This offers transparency into your pay-as-you-go or on-demand invoicing.

Centralized inventory via Red Hat Satellite

An inventory upload plugin enables Red Hat Satellite to report system data to Hybrid Cloud Console. This supports centralized visibility across distributed and security-restricted environments, including heavily firewalled deployments, allowing usage data to be aggregated for enterprise-wide reporting and analysis.

You can opt in to use the full analytical suite of subscription watch features in Hybrid Cloud Console after your data sources are connected.

Core capabilities: Turning data into strategy

Subscription watch is more than a reporting tool; it is a strategic asset for IT operations, finance, and procurement teams.

Real-time current usage versus thresholds

Subscription watch lets you compare your current software footprint with your purchased capacity in real time. By identifying utilization—that is, the percentage of capacity that has actually been deployed—you can prevent a compliance gap where usage exceeds entitlements.

Deep historical analysis

Decisions should not be based on a snapshot. Subscription watch provides up to a year of summarized historical data, depending on configuration, with per-cluster and per-month visibility. This allows you to identify seasonal trends, track the progress of migration projects, and forecast future needs with greater confidence.

Identifying usage hotspots

In complex organizations, one department may need to use more than their share of resources while another may have a surplus available to them. Subscription watch provides the granularity to see usage by cluster or account, helping you optimize resource distribution across the entire estate.

Exporting data for reporting and analysis

Many organizations need subscription usage data to support external reporting, financial planning, and audit processes. Subscription watch provides export capabilities that enable teams to download usage and capacity information in standardized formats for offline analysis and integration with internal systems. This allows stakeholders to incorporate subscription data into budgeting, forecasting, and governance workflows, extending visibility beyond the console and into broader operational and financial environments.

No more surprises: Proactive notifications

One of the most frequent customer requests is the ability to avoid compliance surprises or unexpected excess-usage charges. That’s why we are excited to announce the integration of subscription watch events with the Hybrid Cloud Console notifications service.

Coming soon in March 2026, customers will be able to automate alerts that trigger when usage hits 105% of their pre-purchased capacity. This proactive compliance safety net enables your team to address such issues before they result in unbudgeted excess charges or audit discrepancies.

Security and privacy: Data that pushes, never pulls

Connecting systems to a cloud console should not mean compromising your security posture. The subscription watch architecture is built on a push-only model.

  • No inbound connections: Red Hat never initiates a connection into your environment. Your systems push metadata outbound via standard HTTPS (port 443).
  • Metadata focus: Subscription watch only collects system information (vCPUs, sockets, host/guest mappings) necessary for metering. It never accesses your application data, source code, or customer databases.

Start maximizing your value today

Subscription watch is available to all Red Hat customers with an active subscription. There is no additional license to buy or complex infrastructure to deploy. By centralizing subscription visibility and usage insights, subscription watch helps organizations establish stronger governance across their hybrid cloud environments.

Getting started requires only a few simple steps:

  1. Log in to console.redhat.com.
  2. Navigate to the Subscriptions section.
  3. Follow the onboarding steps and select Opt-in to activate subscription watch and gain a unified view of your hybrid cloud environment.
