Red Hat Appoints Geun Kim as General Manager for Korea

Geun Kim to introduce strategic initiatives for Korea to cater to increasing market demand for open source technology

Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT), the world's leading provider of open source solutions, today announced the appointment of Geun Kim as General Manager for Red Hat's Korea operations. Effective immediately, Kim will lead all strategic developments and programs key to generating business growth in the region and will also be responsible for Red Hat’s overall operations in Korea. Based in Seoul, Kim will report to the President of Red Hat Asia-Pacific Operations, Gery Messer.

Kim most recently served as Marketing and Sales Operation Director at Sun Microsystems Korea where he played an instrumental role in formulating strategic marketing initiatives and charting the growth of the business unit. Here he also met and exceeded the annual revenue targets set by the company’s global headquarters. Kim also redesigned the channel process to develop a co-marketing funding model with distributors and resellers, and created greater cost efficiency for marketing programs.

Previously, Kim also served as Chief Operating Officer at local firms Cinetown Co. and Haansoft Inc. between 2002 and 2005. Cinetown is a leading video games and comics rental franchisor with over 600 retail outlets in Korea. Under Kim’s leadership, Cinetown experienced significant business growth with new revenue streams and was successfully positioned as one of the largest franchise networks in Korea. Likewise for Haansoft, a once dwindling software development and systems integration solutions provider in Korea, Kim successfully turned the company around with a portfolio of new products and solutions and restructured the company as an efficient and competitive sales and marketing organization within just one year.

Kim was also Marketing Director for Asia at Microsoft Corporation from 2000 to 2001 in a regional role based out of Hong Kong, which he undertook after his previous marketing role for Korea.

Korea is an important market for Red Hat in the Asia Pacific region given its strong local open source community and a high adoption rate in both the government and commercial sectors”, said Gery Messer, President of Red Hat Asia-Pacific operations. “Kim’s enterprising spirit and ability to drive business growth will be core advantages for our Korean team and will ensure that Red Hat plays an even greater role in bringing the value of open source software to customers in Korea.”

“Open source has played an active role in transforming Korea into one of the most technologically advanced nations in the world”, said Kim. “Domestic demand for Linux continues to be on the rise and I look forward to leveraging growing market opportunities and translating them into business growth for Red Hat.”

Kim holds a bachelor’s degree from Seoul National University (South Korea) and an MBA in marketing and statistics from the University of Chicago (USA).
