Finding the patient voice

Time & Date: Wednesday, March 16 1:15 PM-2:15 PM EDT

Location: Orange County Convention Center, Hall E-Booth 8240- Interoperability Showcase Theater

Abstract: Urgent treatment decisions are made at unpredictable times, making immediate access to advance directive and advance care plan information an essential component to providing personalized care.  Erosion of trust in the healthcare system occurs when treatment is not informed by an individual’s personal values, goals, and preferences.  Most electronic record systems were unable to locate and retrieve previously created digital and paper documents from outside the treating provider’s setting.  The unique healthcare conditions brought on by the pandemic underscored the critical need for accessible, verifiable digital advance healthcare decision documents.  During the height of the crisis, many individuals found themselves during a transition of care without family and/or friends at their side to inform and influence medical care decisions. Thus, COVID not only highlighted the importance of advance care planning for healthy adults, patients, and their families.  It also heightened medical professionals’ expectations for seamless data access to this critical information.

Emerging approaches to enterprise knowledge and clinical task management

Time & Date: Tuesday, March 15, 3:00 PM-4:00 PM EDT

Location: Orange County Convention Center, W307A

Abstract: While the technology side of HIT has evolved at a breakneck pace, advancement around the applied use and distribution of clinical knowledge has not been able to keep up. With the body of knowledge of medicine doubling annually or faster, quality care delivery is increasingly predicated on our ability to represent, ingest, and apply that knowledge at the point of care. Moderated by the VA, this panel discussion will use real-world applications to explore the gaps in this lifecycle, mechanisms to express and use knowledge and workflow to achieve the learning health system, explore example alternative approaches, and examine the future and implications of knowledge when treated as a first-order Enterprise asset.

Speakers: Ben Cushing, Chief Architect, Federal Health & Life Sciences, Red Hat

Jane Shellum, Section Head, Knowledge Management and Delivery, Mayo Clinic

Jonathan Nebeker, MS, National Chief Medical Information Officer (Acting), Veterans Health Administration

Kenneth Rubin, Senior Advisor, Standards and Interop Veterans Health Administration

Data protection: scaling healthcare with digital transformation and zero trust

Time & Date: Monday, March 14, 9:40 AM-10:10 AM  EDT

Location: Rosen Centre, Junior Ballroom F

Abstract: Bringing 21st-century healthcare to the patient is driving the adoption of the latest technologies including edge and microservices architectures. The ongoing pandemic highlighted the need for telemedicine and moved point-of-care from hospitals and clinics all the way into patient homes. These modern design principles must be employed to create comprehensive healthcare solutions, accommodate infrastructure growth and rapidly increasing number of devices, enable "healthcare follows the patient" movement, and create "connected hospitals." All this has increased multi-tenancy and a need to process sensitive data at remote and point of care locations, while in a more challenging cybersecurity environment. We’ll discuss this absolute need for 21st-century data protection in order to guard sensitive data no matter where the data is processed. The journey and digital transformation to zero trust becomes imperative with results in scalable and efficient healthcare operations. Examining how Zero Trust architectures are used and being deployed by the nation’s critical infrastructure and how defense agencies can guide us as we build these secure healthcare systems.

Speakers: Maksim Yankovskiy, Chief Technology Officer, Zettaset

Michael Epley, Chief Architect and Security Strategy, Public Sector, Red Hat
