Greenpeace Brings The Penguin On Board

Red Hat Linux saves time and money for Greenpeace UK

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Red Hat, Inc. (Nasdaq: RHAT), the world's premier open source and Linux provider, today announced that Greenpeace UK, the UK presence of the global environmental action group, has successfully migrated its operation-critical fundraising systems in the UK from a Windows desktop product to a Java Enterprise solution running on Red Hat Linux. As a not-for-profit organisation, Greenpeace UK is entirely dependent on public contributions and relies heavily on the database systems that it has built of supporters and fundraising activities. Switching to the Red Hat Linux operating system has enabled Greenpeace UK to reduce the total cost of these core systems, whilst ensuring the stability and security of its data assets.

said Kit Kline, systems developer at Greenpeace UK. "While our systems development team were not initially very familiar with Linux, its stability and the depth of support offered by Red Hat has made it the easy, as well as the cost effective, choice. Greenpeace UK devotes its time and resources to dealing with many important issues, and Red Hat ensures that IT problems aren't one of them."

Having evaluated Red Hat Linux against other enterprise-class alternatives, including Microsoft NT and Sun Solaris, to compare performance, reliability, configurability and support services, Greenpeace UK selected Red Hat Linux software and support to run some of its most crucial systems. It implemented a 'plug and play' solution comprising Dell servers pre-installed and pre-configured with Red Hat Linux 7.1, running a Java application server and IBM's DB2 database.

The systems infrastructure currently supports around 15 staff members accessing data from head office. The system will also support supplier interaction, remote staff and on-line fundraising. To date, Greenpeace, both in the UK and internationally, has also chosen Linux for a variety of mission critical systems and continues to swap out further proprietary servers in favour of Linux.

said Scott Harrison, director of Red Hat, Northern Europe. "For Greenpeace UK, the fundraising systems and databases provide vital support to staff and members across the country, highlighting the need for a stable platform on which to run the network. Red Hat has proven time and again that Linux is ready for mission-critical deployment, and we are pleased that Greenpeace UK has selected Red Hat Linux to support its activities."
