Open Source Hits the Movies

Local cinema giant’s deployment of Red Hat’s solutions helps improve customer service and experience

-
Red Hat, Inc. (NASDAQ:RHAT), the world's leading provider of open source solutions to the enterprise, today announced that Golden Village Multiplexes, has adopted its Red Hat Enterprise Linux solutions and clustering suites for all its ten locations around Singapore. Golden Village, which runs eight cinema multiplexes and has 43% market share, is Singapore’s cinema entertainment leader.

Golden Village today relies on Red Hat to support its entire ticketing system, which include box office, Internet and phone bookings, thereby supporting up an average of 133,000 paid admissions sold in a week. Golden Village made the decision to switch to open source solutions as early as in 2004, when it faced constant problems with its network infrastructure.

According to Mr. Roger Lim, IT Manager of Golden Village Multiplex Pte Ltd, “the previous infrastructure was not only unstable, but it faced performance issues. The system would hang quite frequently, resulting in irate consumers who were not able to purchase tickets online. We had to restart the servers every week just so to enhance performance and reduce such incidents. This was unacceptable, as such, we sought an open source alternative.”

“Our ticketing system is supported by a central computerized system. Offering our patrons a stable and reliable service is an integral part of our business, and ever since the adoption of Red Hat’s solutions, we’ve met these goals. I am extremely pleased with the performance and technical advantages they can offer, and we’ve seen improved customer purchasing experience, both online and over the counter”, added Mr. Lim.

“The adoption of our solutions by one of Singapore’s movie giants reiterates that Open Source has really reached critical mass. We are pleased to support Golden Village in providing consumers top class service and stability with Linux”, said Mr Steve McWhirter, Vice President, Red Hat Asia Pacific.

The Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES 3.0 solution adopted by Golden Village was first introduced back in September 2003 – providing support for a wide range of architectures like Intel X86, Intel Itanium2, AMD AMD64 and IBM zSeries, POWER Series, and S/390. With improved scalability and forward capabilities, security features have also been improved, including support for file system ACLS.
