Red Hat Embedded Year 2001 in Review

RALEIGH, N.C. -

2001 was an important year for open-source embedded tools and operating systems. Red Hat, Inc. (Nasdaq: RHAT), worked on dozens of architecture ports, certification projects and consulting engagements for some of the biggest names in technology. Today millions of people depend on Red Hat embedded technologies for anything, from staying connected while on the move, to watching the next generation of digital televisions.

"Red Hat embedded Linux made great strides last year as large corporations came to realize the significant cost savings, reliability and custom flexibility of open source embedded Linux." said Michael Tiemann, CTO, Red Hat. "As Red Hat embedded technology continues to drive the next generation of communications devices, handheld devices, and digital entertainment, developers will continue to reap the benefits of a mature, cost effective and configurable technology."

2001 Highlights:

  • Red Hat provided consulting and technical support to 3G LAB to deliver First Open Source Operating System for next generation mobile devices.
  • Altera is working with Red Hat to deploy GNUPro tools and Red Hat software technologies for Altera's Nios, PPC, MIPS and ARM platforms
  • Delphi tapped Red Hat eCos for its MPC in-car infotainment device.
  • Red Hat provided Fujitsu with tools for their Robin (FR400) processor.
  • Hitachi came to Red Hat for certification of Embedded Linux on their HS7729PCI board. In addition, Hitachi and Red Hat are continuing to work together to deploy Red Hat GNUPro and Embedded Linux for Hitachi SH processors that are used in all types of embedded applications.
  • Intel chose Red Hat GNUPro Tools for its new XScale microarchitecture.
  • NEC and Red Hat are working together on advanced GNU/Linux solutions for NEC's 64 bit processors. These solutions are being designed into Set Top Box and entertainment platforms offered by leading end user product companies.
  • Red Hat is working with PMC/Sierra on providing Embedded Linux solutions to strategic PMC-Sierra customers for network infrastructure applications.
  • Sandcraft is a MIPS Licensee that is working with Red Hat to expand their offerings based on Red Hat technologies.

2001 also marked the introduction of Red Hat's Embedded Linux Developer Suite, a collection of tools and runtime technologies which enable the creation, deployment and testing of target software components for devices.

The addition of the Developer Suite to an already extensive collection of embedded offerings allows embedded developers to select the open-source embedded technology that best suits present and future projects, instead of building devices to suit the proprietary constraints of alternative embedded runtimes. Additional information about the Developer Suite, Red Hat's embedded configurable operating system (eCos), GNUPro development tools, the EL/IX application-programming interface, the RedBoot bootstrap-loader and uCLinux can be found at Red Hat's embedded project center.
