Leadership Conversations
Mission-Driven Leadership in a VUCA World
How can military leadership principles help you succeed in today's unpredictable business world?
Join Irena Privoba from Red Hat Services for an insightful conversation with Anders Møller, a leader with a unique and valuable background spanning over 25 years in the Danish Army, 15 years in the digital transformation sector, and as an elected politician in Denmark.
This interview delves deep into the concept of a
VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity) environment, an acronym first popularized in the 1990s by the U.S. Army. Anders draws powerful parallels between military operations and the challenges faced by modern businesses, showing how lessons from one can be applied to the other.
In this discussion, you will learn about:
- Mission Command: How the military principle of communicating a clear commander's intent empowers teams to act decisively and take initiative, even when communications are down.
- Purpose over Micromanagement: Why giving your team the freedom to decide how they will achieve their task is more effective than dictating the exact process.
- Training True Leaders: The critical difference between being a top specialist and being a leader, and why the military is one of the best organizations at developing leadership as a specialty in itself.
- Leading Through Change: How to foster psychological safety so your team feels empowered to make decisions and adapt to new technologies and processes without fear.
- Cross-Functional Teams: The importance of assembling specialists from different areas (e.g., intelligence, operations, artillery) to create robust, high-quality plans—a practice just as relevant in business as it is in the army.
Whether you're leading a corporate team, a startup, or a complex transformation project, this conversation offers timeless wisdom on how to lead with clarity, purpose, and courage in our unpredictable world.

Behind the Insights: Meet The Expert
Anders Moller is a multifaceted leader whose experience spans three distinct domains: the military, corporate technology, and public service. As a Major in the Danish Army Reserve with over 25 years of service, he was formally trained in the principles of "Mission Command"—a leadership philosophy centered on providing clear intent and empowering teams to take initiative and make decisions autonomously.
He has successfully translated this approach to the private sector, where his practical military experience is complemented by a degree in Leadership and Management from the Copenhagen Business School, with a special focus on Innovation and Organisational Change. For the past 15 years, he has applied this combined expertise to guide organizations through complex digital transformations. In his current role as Director for Professional Services at Red Hat, he applies these principles of agility and purpose-driven leadership to navigate the rapidly changing business world.
Rounding out his profile is his commitment to civic duty as an elected member of his local Municipal Council in Denmark, adding a community-focused dimension to his leadership perspective.
