Today the Trillian project team announced that the source code for the port of Linux to Intel's forthcoming IA-64 is being released to the Open Source community. Representing a key milestone in the Trillian project, the source code release is an invitation to the Open Source community to participate in the development of the IA-64 Linux kernel and applications for IA-64. This event is another step in enabling the development of applications that demand the computing power of IA-64 in a Linux operating system environment.
Sri Chilukuri, Trillian program director and director of business development for VA Linux Systems said: "This marks the first time that software can be developed by the entire Open Source Community for a pre-production processor architecture. The source code release is further proof that companies and the Open Source community can work together to achieve common goals."
Ron Curry, Director of Marketing, Intel IA-64 Processor Division said: "We are pleased with the progress that the Trillian team has made on the development of Linux for IA-64. By releasing the source code to the Open Source community, we can accelerate enabling the Linux platform to be ready for the Itanium processor launch."
Michael Tiemann, chief technology officer, Red Hat, Inc., said: "It is a well-known fact that the success of Linux depends upon the availability of applications and that the availability of tools drive applications. By providing the GNUPro toolkit at the outset, we can ensure that the IA-64 platform will have access to the rich and growing list of Linux and Open Source applications."

The project currently includes Caldera, CERN, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Intel, Red Hat, SGI, SuSE, TurboLinux and VA Linux Systems, and represents the first major effort by the server and workstation industry to support an Open Source project of this depth and scale.
