Red Hat Introduces Software Provisioning to Simplify Systems Deployment, Management and Scalability

Red Hat Network provisioning helps enterprises quickly deploy and dynamically configure thousands of systems.

"The Provisioning Module helps organizations cost effectively manage enterprise infrastructure," said Paul Cormier, Executive Vice President of Engineering at Red Hat. "Red Hat has centralized and automated the process of system provisioning with one simple interface. The new capability is proof of Red Hat's dedication to provide systems management that addresses the complexity of an Open Source Architecture, from the core platform through applications."

Available to Red Hat Linux users since 2000, Red Hat Network is designed to provide simple systems management for Linux infrastructures. Red Hat Network helps organizations increase productivity, lower costs, and enhance security. Red Hat Network is now comprised of three distinct modules for Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems management:

  • Update Module - The Update Module is included in every Red Hat Enterprise Linux subscription and is the entry level offering for Red Hat Network. The Update Module allows customers to easily maintain single systems and includes capabilities such as a graphical user interface, priority notification, errata information, RPM dependency checking and auto update.
  • Management Module - The Management Module enables customers to group systems as well as perform role-based administration for policies, permissions and scheduled actions.
  • Provisioning Module - The Provisioning Module allows customers to manage the complete life cycle of their Linux infrastructure and includes features such as OS provisioning, configuration management, multi-state rollback, Kickstart configuration tools, and RPM-based application provisioning.

"With more than 5,000 unique Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers under management, Rackspace needed need a tool by which we could efficiently provision, patch and rebuild servers," said Dirk Elmendorf, Chief Technology Evangelist and co-founder, Rackspace Managed Hosting. "Our ability to provision a customized built-to-order server in a matter of hours and our ability to quickly fix problems day or night is key to our customers' experience. As a Red Hat Advanced Hosting partner and beta tester of Red Hat Network, Rackspace is confident that our company and customers will greatly benefit from the provisioning features that are new to Red Hat Network in 2004."

"Red Hat Network's new Provisioning Module enables Telefonica to manage all of our systems with fewer resources,"said Michael Kutzner, Director Systems & Applications at Telefonica Deutschland GmbH. "We are now able to provision new systems quickly and reconfigure on the fly. This makes Red Hat Enterprise Linux even more of a value to our organization."

Customers can deploy Red Hat Network in three different architectures (hosted by Red Hat, Red Hat Network Satellite and Proxy Server). For more information on Red Hat Network, please visit or call 866-2-REDHAT.
