Red Hat, Inc. (Nasdaq: RHAT), the world's premier open source and Linux provider, today announced expanded enterprise offerings for its popular Red Hat Network service. Red Hat Network is a comprehensive web-based systems management service that includes configuration and asset management for Red Hat Linux installations, and supports embedded systems based on Red Hat Linux. The leading network management system for Linux, Red Hat Network has a fast-growing subscriber base, with more than 400,000 systems connected to Red Hat Network.

The new Red Hat Network Workgroup service builds upon this success, adding significant capabilities for the secure management of complex open source systems within large enterprises. Through the new service, enterprise organizations can better conserve IT resources by managing thousands of Red Hat Linux Systems through a single intuitive Web interface.

"Large enterprises have begun to realize that the benefits of migrating to Linux extend beyond the operating system, to include crucial business elements such as security and management," said Paul Cormier, Executive Vice President of Engineering, Red Hat. "The new Red Hat Network Services offer the enterprise-class capabilities that these businesses require to easily oversee large, complex Red Hat Linux deployments while keeping administration costs down."

In addition to the standard features of the existing Basic Service, such as errata alerts, centralized remote management and system profiling, subscribers to the Red Hat Network Workgroup Service may benefit from the following features and service options:

  • System Grouping-- Administrators can group workload-focused systems such as Web servers or database servers together to manage them by common configurations;

  •
  • Multiple Administrators-- Administrators may be given rights to particular system groups, easing the burden of systems management in large organizations

In conjunction with subscriptions to the Red Hat Network Workgroup Service, customers also will have the following additional options for added convenience and security:

  • Red Hat Network Proxy Server-- Red Hat Network Proxy Server deploys a secure and customized proxy system for a customer's site. The server will cache packages for distribution across a local Intranet while maintaining a single, secure connection to Red Hat Network.

  •
  • Red Hat Network Satellite-- Red Hat Network Satellite is a custom-built system that brings Red Hat Network customers the highest possible level of security control. Designed for flexibility and security, the Satellite Web interface can be disconnected from the Internet and served from a local web server, granting customers complete control over their connection to Red Hat Network.

Proxy Server and Satellite work in tandem and may be combined, offering an ideal solution for a company with multiple locations, where the Satellite would be deployed centrally, and Proxy Servers would be deployed in each remote office.
