Red Hat Introduces Teiid Open Source Data Integration Project

JBoss.org community project targets Enterprise Information Integration through data services

RALEIGH, N.C -

Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT), the world's leading provider of open source solutions, announced today the official launch of the Teiid data virtualization system project in the JBoss.org Community. Teiid marks the first open source community project that aims to deliver Enterprise Information Integration (EII) with both relational and XML data virtualization. The Teiid project joins a number of other Red Hat-sponsored open source virtualization projects, including the oVirt.org project, and demonstrates Red Hat's commitment to providing a comprehensive range of virtualization capabilities.

"When Red Hat acquired MetaMatrix in April 2007, we committed to releasing the data services technology in the open source community and Teiid is the result of that promise," said Craig Muzilla, vice president of Red Hat's middleware business. "The demand for applications and services leveraging the data stores of a typical organization never ends. But now, enterprises have a choice between expensive, proprietary data services and an enterprise-class open source platform at a fraction of the cost."

Most open source data integration technologies center on physically moving or copying data to locations. Teiid bucks this trend by focusing on data virtualization, which enables real-time access to data across heterogeneous data sources without copying or moving the data from the systems of record. Its Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) and Web Services interfaces are designed to provide straightforward integration with both custom and COTS applications.

Teiid is also expected to provide the backbone for future versions of the JBoss Enterprise Data Services Platform, which is available via subscription that includes 24x7 support, patches and updates, a multi-year maintenance policy and software assurance from Red Hat.

Members of the open source middleware ecosystem will have a number of opportunities to benefit from the launch of Teiid:

  • Developers receive a powerful tool with Teiid, thanks to its ease of integration with existing systems and standards support. Data federation capabilities may be embedded into applications without deploying a second server runtime environment. Extensibility and customization points abound, from SQL language function extensions to scriptable administration to a rich connector API for communicating with data sources not accessible through the set of included connectors.
  • ISVs and System Integrators frequently grapple with how to unite data across their customers' many and varied data silos. Teiid is intended to simplify this data integration task whether it be to make consolidated, uniform data available to the ISV's application, or to speed the System Integrators work in delivering solutions that fully leverage the customer's disparate data assets.
  • Enterprise Architects may access the core of the JBoss Data Services Platform (currently MetaMatrix) with the community launch of Teiid. The power of data virtualization can help solve common problems of heterogeneous data source access for operational applications and business intelligence, bridging on-premise and cloud-based data sources, application migration and modernization as well as tactical data federation on small and large projects alike.
