  • Discover Red Hat Summit sessions covering Insights features that you can catch on-demand

Digital transformation is a team sport, requiring deliberate coordination between application developers, infrastructure administrators, IT security practitioners, and even finance. At Red Hat Summit this year, we shared some of our recommendations to help you better align these different domains within your organization. In this post, we’ll cover what you might have missed at Summit and share how Red Hat Insights can support these efforts.

Thinking about Security Operations (SecOps)

Since security is top of mind for so many IT leaders, we will start here. Both the sophistication and frequency of cyberattacks is increasing. The landscape is always changing, and threat actors are not always working alone. State-sponsored hacking is pervasive. In response, governments are using regulatory requirements to increase the pressure on organizations and ensure they have the correct processes and controls in place to protect sensitive information.

Enterprises are trying to keep up with the increase in exposure across a growing hybrid cloud infrastructure. Their security teams are stretched thin. Large volumes of events logged by security systems must be analyzed, while managing risk across the business as they try to stay ahead of the next celebrity vulnerability.

Security operations teams (SecOps) need to think about security as a data science problem: if they can identify more signals in their data, they can process those insights effectively and automate their remediation response.

Red Hat Insights, a feature available with a Red Hat subscription, can help better secure your environments and manage them at scale. Red Hat Insights flags known exploits and provides a custom threat analysis, making it easier to perform security operations, and help your organization avoid being the next headline.

Accelerating DevOps

Developer operations (DevOps) teams have been gaining momentum for some time, but have enjoyed even greater interest over the past 18 months or so. These teams—historically on opposite sides of the application delivery life cycle—are struggling to balance the pace of innovation with managing and optimizing their IT environment.

The rapid increase in the scale of IT infrastructure, complexity of application architectures, and volume of automation is only complicating this situation. While apps and infrastructure become more complex, the teams managing them usually haven't scaled as substantially. As a result, operations may struggle to keep up and pursue innovation.

It is no secret that DevOps teams are looking elsewhere to help transform and accelerate their application pipelines.

Analytics can help IT operations anticipate and solve issues before they happen. Red Hat Insights allows DevOps teams to proactively monitor their IT environments—with some users comparing it to having an extra pair of eyes. Red Hat Insights analyzes data across all footprints, highlighting performance patterns and configuration drift that could impact application performance.

Furthermore, Insights prioritizes risks and recommends remediation through playbooks that can combine more than 20 years of Red Hat engineering knowledge with the unique needs of each DevOps team. Teams benefit from enhanced visibility and application governance, and can now support applications as fast as their businesses require.

Balancing service costs with service quality: FinOps

With cloud computing especially, developer teams can find themselves over-provisioned before they realize it.

Cloud providers send invoices, but the lack of tracking makes it hard to enforce financial accountability, and to predict the actual costs of an application going forward. Without granular visibility into, and control over, how teams are spending, the business cannot confidently ensure long-term funding for cloud-based technologies.

Financial operations (FinOps) is the cross-functional discipline of balancing service costs with application quality and development agility. When you connect your systems to Red Hat, and properly annotate your infrastructure Insights, your business, finance, and IT operations teams recover the visibility they once had.

Insights finops

Red Hat Insights helps inform future forecasting, avoid negative financial or application performance for the company, and provides a way for your organization to balance between accelerating growth and controlling IT spend.

Another challenge shared by both DevOps and FinOps is subscription management. Surveys of Red Hat customers have shown us that this task is time consuming, overly complex, and business impacting. Insights also includes a dashboard for tracking account-wide Red Hat subscription utilization, streamlining reporting and trending for self-governance across the enterprise.
