In this OpenShift Commons Briefing, Red Hat’s Annette Clewett, Dylan Murray, and Raghu Manjunath discuss and demonstrate how OpenShift API Data Protection (OADP) and Ceph-CSI provide a strong foundation for developing a cluster level backup and recovery solution for OpenShift workloads. There are many popular Enterprise backup solution providers planning to deliver their products for OpenShift, building on this OADP API & Ceph CSI foundation.
OADP is a community operator available in OpenShift’s OperatorHub today and exposes the Velero APIs for backup, restore, and scheduling. Ceph-CSI is now capable of creating volume snapshots and this capability is now available in Rook release-1.4 and soon to be released in OpenShift Container Storage 4.6 late 2020. The Velero CSI plugin works with Ceph-CSI and the VolumeSnapshotClass resource to create a snapshot of persistent volumes when a backup is initiated for the application using the persistent volume.

What is OpenShift Commons?
Commons builds connections and collaboration across OpenShift communities, projects, and stakeholders. In doing so we'll enable the success of customers, users, partners, and contributors as we deepen our knowledge and experiences together.
Our goals go beyond code contributions. Commons is a place for companies using OpenShift to accelerate its success and adoption. To do this we'll act as resources for each other, share best practices and provide a forum for peer-to-peer communication.
