The patch was ready in days. It took months to ship. Why?

I hear that question in nearly every customer conversation about vulnerability management. The honest answer is rarely “We didn’t know about it.” It’s “We knew, but getting it into production took longer than the exploit window.”

That delay, the time between a patch’s release and it actually running in production across every exposed application, is one of the most overlooked metrics in managing enterprise risk. AI is collapsing time-to-exploit into hours, while many organizations still take 40 to 90 days to rebuild, validate, and redeploy. Leaders shouldn’t have to choose between staying exposed and risking an outage on a revenue-generating service. This is not a security-team problem alone. It is a business-risk problem that affects the entire organization.

Shift from reactive patching to proactive supply-chain trust

Red Hat and IBM help reduce that burden directly at the supply chain level.

Through Lightwell, we are not waiting for the open source community to produce a fix and pass it along. Our engineering teams actively backport, test, and sign patches for the dependencies that matter most, including fixes for vulnerabilities the upstream project has not addressed yet.

Instead of every enterprise independently researching, rebuilding, and testing the same fix for the same library, Red Hat and IBM do that labor once at the source. We deliver a version-specific,  remediated component into the pipeline. In critical cases, we make sure the fix exists in the first place.

But a signed library in a repository does not shrink your attack surface. A fix is not useful until it is running and until you can prove it.

Moving your patch to production

Lightwell delivers the trusted patch. Red Hat OpenShift is the application platform that ships it to production with speed and control.

That path is strongest when a trusted software factory sits between the 2: rebuild, sign, attest, and policy-gate the remediated artifact so unsigned or unproven code never reaches production. Lightwell closes the gap on getting a version-specific patch. OpenShift and the trusted supply chain close the gap on getting the fix live across the hybrid estate, data center, cloud, and edge, without forcing a rip-and-replace of the delivery investments you already run.

Resolving the CVE is only step 1. True resilience comes from accelerating the path from patch availability to verified production deployment. The goal is simple: trusted patches to production in days, not months.

At the infrastructure layer, the fix often exists the moment your operating system vendor publishes it. The hard part is applying it everywhere it needs to go, and doing so at scale, with governance, without breaking production, and with a record you would hand to an auditor. Done well, multiweek patch cycles can become hours, and compliance evidence is a byproduct of the workflow, not a scramble after the fact.

At the application layer, patching isn't just an update, it's a governance workflow. Without automated trust gates, every patch forces security leads into a trade-off between speed and operational stability. For your development team, this means a fix cannot just be installed, it has to be rebuilt into a new artifact, clear the same trust bar applied to any release, and redeployed safely. Historically that meant waiting for a developer to notice an alert, research a safe version, and push the change through continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) whenever there was room in the sprint. That process was already too slow. Now it’s under new pressure as AI coding agents quickly generate commits and builds entering pipelines faster than any team can manually review.

More alerts do not help here. What helps is a finished, validated, signed component flowing through an automated software pipeline, a trusted software factory. Changes should be rolled out incrementally using progressive delivery so live traffic validates the patch safely. The result should not be only a patched application. It should be cryptographic proof of exactly what changed. This is very different evidence to present a regulator than “we believe we’re patched.”

3 questions to ask your team

The most resilient organizations have stopped asking “are we vulnerable?” Every credible vendor can answer that now; it’s the baseline expectation. Leading businesses ask 3 sharper questions:

  • “Is it fixed?”
  •  “Is it running?”
  • “Can we prove it?”

Creating patches addresses the first part of the problem. Reducing the time between “the fix exists” and “the fix is protecting customers” is what actually reduces exposure to vulnerabilities and outages. That only works when a trusted remediation meets an application platform built to quickly ship it, with control and proof.
