Red Hat OpenShift 4.18 now includes general availability support for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) bare metal instances, as well as Oracle’s on-prem solutions, Oracle Compute Cloud@Customer (C3) and Oracle Private Cloud Appliance (PCA). This expansion aligns with the latest OpenShift 4.18 features, providing you greater flexibility when deploying OpenShift, and enabling a seamless hybrid cloud experience.

This collaboration (two years in the making) enhances OpenShift’s availability on Oracle’s infrastructure, giving customers a consistent Kubernetes experience across environments. Whether you're running OpenShift natively on OCI bare metal or deploying in an on-prem regulated setting with Compute Cloud@Customer and Private Cloud Appliance, you can now take advantage of OpenShift's powerful new features with the flexibility of Oracle's infrastructure. This milestone reinforces Red Hat and Oracle's commitment to delivering enterprise-grade hybrid cloud solutions, empowering customers to modernize applications, optimize IT operations, and accelerate digital transformation.

Advantages of deploying OpenShift on OCI bare metal instances

  • High performance: Direct access to physical hardware without a hypervisor results in lower latency and higher throughput, ideal for performance-intensive applications
  • Scalability: Support for large-scale workloads with high-performance networking. This makes it suitable for AI/ML, HPC, and large databases
  • Security and isolation: A dedicated environment with no shared resources allows for  improved security policies and isolation of workloads
  • Flexible compute choices: Multiple shapes, including GPU and specialized instances, to optimize performance for different workloads
  • Customizable networking: Supports high-bandwidth, low-latency networking with flexible Virtual Cloud Networks (VCN) and bare metal infrastructure
  • Optimized for Enterprise applications: Ideal for enterprise applications requiring consistent and predictable performance.

Leveraging OCI bare metal instances with OpenShift enables you to run and manage both virtual machines (VM) and containers on a single, unified platform, facilitating the modernization of traditional workloads while embracing cloud-native technologies. With OpenShift now generally available for OCI bare metal instances in this release, Red Hat is also introducing the technology preview of OpenShift Virtualization on OCI as part of OpenShift 4.18.

Advantages of deploying OpenShift on C3 and PCA

  • Seamless hybrid cloud integration: More easily manage OpenShift workloads across both on-premises environments and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), enabling consistency and portability
  • Robust security and compliance: Protect sensitive workloads on-premises while leveraging a managed cloud platform, helping ensure adherence to critical regulatory requirements
  • High-performance optimization: Experience low-latency access to applications and data with minimized network hops, enhancing overall system performance
  • Cost-effective infrastructure: Maximize efficiency by utilizing Oracle's high-performance hardware and cost-effective dedicated cloud infrastructure for OpenShift clusters and containerized applications
  • Enhanced control and flexibility: Maintain full control over your infrastructure while benefiting from the scalability, agility, and continuous innovation of Oracle Cloud
  • Simplified IT operations: Streamline operations with automated deployments, seamless scaling, and efficient management capabilities
