Virgilio Tecnologia - Linux conquista una banca italiana

Red Hat installera' il sistema open source sugli 8mila pc di un istituto finanziario italiano, ma il suo nome resta un mistero...

Un importante istituto finanziario italiano ha deciso di installare il sistema operativo Linux su migliaia di computer. Lo ha annunciato recentemente il vicepresidente europeo di Red Hat, Werner Knoblich, che pero', con fare misterioso, non ha voluto comunicare il nome della banca in questione. Secondo Knoblich, quest'ultima avrebbe firmato recentemente un accordo per far migrare 8mila pc al sistema open source di Red Hat.

In generale, intervenendo nel corso di una manifestazione per promuovere Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, Knoblich ha dichiarato che Red Hat sta assistendo a una domanda crescente dei propri prodotti desktop. "Abbiamo avuto un aumento notevole delle richieste di soluzioni desktop e di informazioni su queste ultime".
Attualmente, la maggior parte dei ricavi della societa' derivano dalla sostituzione di server Unix, ma Knoblich prevede che con il tempo i desktop aumentino di importanza. "Da una punto di vista di business, da dove otterremo i ricavi maggiori? Dalla sostituzione di Unix", afferma Knoblich. "Ma questa proporzione diminuira' a causa dell'aumento di ricavi derivati dalla vendita di soluzioni desktop? Si', ne sono sicuro. Le possibilita' sono enormi - siamo solo alla punta dell'iceberg".
Red Hat e' entrata relativamente tardi nel mercato dei desktop, con il lancio del suo primo prodotto per questo settore nel maggio 2004. Nel mercato Linux, i suoi concorrenti comprendono SuSE Linux, Mandrakesoft e Sun, che ha basato il suo Java Desktop System sul sistema operativo open source. Tuttavia, sono sempre di piu' le organizzazioni pubbliche e private che migrano almeno in parte a Linux: tra queste, vi sono i comuni di Monaco, Vienna e Bergen, la societa' di autonoleggio Europcar, e la Allied Irish Bank, in un contesto generale di crescente diffusione del sistema open source in ambiente finanziario.
