Red Hat SummitMicrosoft si è offerta di contribuire in maniera significativa al Linux kernel su licenza GNU General Public License versione 2. Si tratta di una notizia importante. Sembra ieri che Microsoft dichiarava Linux, open source e GPL il frutto del diavolo. Oggi Microsoft si propone in maniera credibile per diventare un membro della comunità Linux. In qualità di principale contribuente al kernel Linux, Red Hat desidera incoraggiare Microsoft in questo percorso.
Il contributo consiste in tre device driver Linux pensati per l’interoperabilità. Sono stati progettati per permettere di utilizzare Linux come macchina virtuale su Hyper-V, l’hypervisor di Microsoft. Tale interoperabilità va a vantaggio di Microsoft, chiaramente, per la vendita di Windows. Ma è anche positivo per gli utenti Linux perché dispongono di maggiore scelta e flessibilità. Si tratta di una situazione win-win.In passato, Microsoft è stata molta critica sul GPL licensing, ma ha probabilmente accettato la realtà che il licensing copyleft è qui per restare. Il metodo GPL è ancora il più diffuso sistema di licenza open source e favorisce in maniera significativa lo sviluppo di software gratuiti e aperti. Per quanto concerne la comunità kernel non ci sono alternative. L’accettazione da parte di Microsoft del GPL suggerisce un nuovo livello di realismo ponderato a Redmond. Anche questo è incoraggiante.
Ma c’è ancora una questione importante da considerare prima che Microsoft possa essere ritenuta un membro a tutti gli effetti della comunità Linux – i brevetti. Negli anni, i membri individuali e aziendali della comunità hanno – tramite passi formali e non – chiarito che non perseguiranno o minacceranno cause sui brevetti nel settore Linux. Le minacce ai brevetti non si conciliano con lo spirito che contraddistingue norme e valori che stanno alla base di Linux. Per conquistare il rispetto e la fiducia della comunità Linux, Microsoft dovrebbe sconfessare tale comportamento e promettere che i suoi brevetti non verranno mai utilizzati contro Linux o altri sviluppatori e utenti open source.
Ci congratuliamo quindi con Microsoft per questo passo e seguiremo con attenzione i progressi sul fronte dell’interoperabilità e il suo reale impegno nei confronti della comunità open source.
