RALEIGH, N.C. - —
Red Hat (NYSE: RHT), the world's leading provider of open source solutions, today announced that EDB Business Partner, one of the largest IT services companies in the Nordics, has implemented Red Hat Enterprise Linux on IBM System z mainframe technology to run its business-critical applications and underlying Oracle database. Today, EDB offers its customers Red Hat Enterprise Linux as the standardized operating system for all of its Linux-based IT services, crossing a wide variety of industries, including financial services, retail, telecommunications and the public sector.
"There are clear advantages to mainframe computing including high reliability, security and resource savings in the amount of energy and cooling capacity used to run an application," said Helge Forberg, section chief for Application, Automation and Support Systems at EDB Business Partner. "We now utilize Red Hat Enterprise Linux for in-house mainframe computing and we've experienced a rising demand among customers to whom we can offer Red Hat Enterprise Linux on IBM System z."
The combination of Red Hat Enterprise Linux on IBM System z mainframes offers customers compelling security advantages, including the use of virtualization technologies such as logical partitions (LPARs) that divide the extensive resources of the mainframe between workloads, while securely isolating each application from the others. Additionally, the combination offers the superior physical security associated with centralized mainframe servers and storage installation. Effective security regimes require comprehensive auditing, which both Red Hat Enterprise Linux and the System z hardware deliver, so that organizations can assess the goals of their security policies.
"Enterprise Linux is the mission-critical operating system of choice for many organizations worldwide. The combination of Red Hat Enterprise Linux and IBM System z enables customers to securely run diverse applications and processes," said Scott Crenshaw, vice president, Platform Business Unit at Red Hat. "Customers are able to leverage shared System z resources like memory, storage and I/O and the impressive reliability and performance of Red Hat Enterprise Linux."
