oVirt 3.5 Provides New User Interface and Lifecycle Management through Expanded, Integrated Features

RALEIGH, N.C.
The oVirt project, the open-source, openly governed KVM virtualization management project, today announced the general availability of oVirt 3.5, a community-driven open virtual datacenter management platform. This latest community release includes several new features, including live merge, importing storage domains, advanced scheduling with optaplanner, and Foreman integration.

Developed by a global community, oVirt offers advanced virtualization capabilities, including high availability, live VM migration, live storage migration, the capability to self-host the oVirt engine on a managed virtual machine, and more. As the upstream development project for Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization and other commercial products, oVirt’s integrated virtualization enables enterprises to manage virtual machines with a robust toolset, without the need to re-develop applications to conform to cloud platforms' APIs. If cloud is the way a company wants to go, oVirt shares services with Red Hat’s cloud solutions including RDO, Red Hat's community OpenStack distribution, to improve key building blocks for private and public cloud deployments and allow upstream developments to make their way into Red Hat’s enterprise-hardened cloud and virtualization solutions.

Notable enhancements to oVirt 3.5 include:

Live Merge: If an image has one or more snapshots, oVirt 3.5's merge command will combine the data of one volume into another. Live merges can be performed with data pulled from one snapshot into another snapshot. The engine can merge multiple disks at the same time and each merge can independently fail or succeed in each operation.

Import Storage Domain: This latest release expands oVirt's feature of importing ISOs and exporting storage domains to expand support for importing an existing data storage domain. Based on information stored in the storage domain, oVirt can revive entities such as disks, virtual machines, and templates in the setup of any data center to which the storage domain is attached.

Advanced Foreman Integration: oVirt 3.5 adds the capability to provision and add hypervisors to oVirt from bare metal. Foreman is a complete lifecycle management tool for physical and virtual servers. Through deep integration with configuration management, DHCP, DNS, TFTP, and PXE-based unattended installations, Foreman manages every stage of the lifecycle of your physical or virtual servers. Integrating Foreman with oVirt helps add hypervisor hosts managed by Foreman to the oVirt engine.

oVirt 3.5 also provides enhanced Authentication, Authorization and Accounting support, a new interface based on the popular PatternFly interface, and a new optimizer tool integration that will guide users on how to reduce resource fragmentation. The enhanced self hosted-engine now supports iSCSI storage as requested by the community. oVirt 3.5 will also feature JSON-RPC support for message-based communication, as well as a new oVirt appliance that can be launched in an existing virtual machine manager as a complete oVirt machine, ready for operation.

A complete list of oVirt 3.5 features is available on the oVirt 3.5 release notes page. oVirt 3.5 has improved upon the many features already in this robust platform, as well as new features designed to make virtual machine management an easier process for system administrators and developers.

"It is great to see yet another feature-packed version of oVirt being released. We added both advanced features like Foreman bare-metal deployment and Optaplanner scheduling improvements, while also keeping an eye on ease of deployment like virtual appliances for the Engine and Neutron components of oVirt," said Itamar Heim, Director of Software Engineering, Red Hat. "Most of all I'm happy to see more companies using and providing solutions and services around oVirt, like Wind River and Nimbus Concept."

About the oVirt Project
The oVirt project is an open virtualization project providing a feature-rich server virtualization management system with advanced capabilities for hosts and guests, including high availability, live migration, storage management, system scheduler and more. Powered by KVM on Linux, oVirt offers developer choice of a stand-alone hypervisor, or can be installed on top of an existing Linux platform on an easy-to-use web interface. Some technologies developed in the oVirt community may later be integrated into Red Hat virtualization products, and they are developed in oVirt under a free and open source license so other communities and projects are free to study, adopt and modify them.
Most of all I'm happy to see more companies using and providing solutions and services around oVirt, like Wind River and Nimbus Concept.
