Porsche Informatik recently deployed Red Hat OpenShift to speed application development and delivery and stay competitive in a fast-paced global market. This month, we’re highlighting not just this automotive industry success story, but also customers in the public sector and banking industry that have gained efficiencies by deploying Red Hat OpenShift and adopted a more agile, collaborative DevOps approach along the way.
“Kubernetes has become the de facto standard for Linux container development, making Red Hat OpenShift the clear choice in container technology for us,” said Michael Hinterland, Team Lead, ICS Cloud & Automation and ICS System and Middleware, Porsche Informatik.
Based on the Kubernetes container orchestration standard, Red Hat OpenShift provides a stable container platform environment for end-user-facing applications, as well as continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) pipeline support for development teams. Let’s take a look at how Porsche Informatik, the State of Michigan, and Poalim Bank found success with Red Hat technologies.
OpenShift helps put an automotive IT service provider into gear
Porsche Informatik provides IT services to the Volkswagen Group. Millions of users at car dealerships, workshops, importers, logistics companies, and financial service providers depend on its systems. The organization provides and manages 160 solutions available in 30 countries.
“In this industry, you’re either first to market, or the first loser. We want to migrate our legacy infrastructure to a platform that can help us build cloud-native applications quickly,” said Hinterland.
The organization has used Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) since 2015 and worked with datacenter provider and Red Hat partner eww ITandTEL in 2017 to establish a private cloud environment. With help from eww ITandTEL and a Red Hat Technical Account Manager (TAM), the organization migrated to Red Hat OpenShift running on-premise in its datacenter in just six weeks. The platform now hosts development processes across thousands of containers on 75 nodes, used regularly by more than 350 developers.
With a container-based, cloud-native development environment, Porsche Informatik has established self-service capabilities for its development teams. Developers can provision services and infrastructure independent of the organization’s infrastructure team. Applications and services can be built, tested, and launched to market 90% faster than before.
“Our old approach involved several teams and lots of round of approvals, and we’d need sometimes as long as six weeks to deploy an application. Today, with Red Hat OpenShift, we can have a prototype available within hours,” said Simon Waldner, System Engineer, Porsche Informatik.

Speeding delivery time of citizen-facing services in the Great Lakes State
To keep pace with demand, the State of Michigan’s Department of Technology, Management, and Budget (DTMB) department sought to improve development, delivery, and reliability for agencies’ digital services by migrating to a container-based infrastructure. A key part of these efforts was consolidating and standardizing the state’s IT infrastructure to support its various agencies with a shared platform.
With its new environment based on Red Hat OpenShift, supported by Red Hat storage and automation solutions like Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform, DTMB has reduced application delivery times, getting digital services to citizens faster.
During implementation, the department worked closely with Red Hat Consulting to validate the design, oversee implementation, and learn new skills and best practices for its Red Hat OpenShift container environment. “In the past, we faced drawn-out deployment cycles due to isolation and ineffective communication. Working with Red Hat to deploy OpenShift, and maintaining that relationship, has helped us create a process that has been very collaborative. Our developers feel invested in a platform they helped create,” said David Tremblay, Director of Technical Services, State of Michigan DTMB.
By automating various infrastructure management workflows with Ansible Automation Platform and Red Hat OpenShift, DTMB has created a reliable and scalable foundation to support its plans to adopt cloud computing as part of its IT environment. The case study has more on DTMB’s digital transformation of both citizen-facing services and internal operational processes.
Staying competitive in banking with DevOps workflows
Like many of its competitors, Poalim Bank is facing new opportunities—and challenges—from the financial industry’s shift to digital operations and customer engagement. Poalim, one of Israel’s largest banks, is already an innovation leader in financial services, having opened its first paperless digital branch in 2015 and launching peer-to-peer (P2P) payment platform, Bit, in 2017. Now, Poalim is focused on speeding its time to market for new digital services and features to stay competitive.
Poalim was already familiar with Red Hat, having used RHEL for five years. It recently decided to migrate its digital service and application environment to Red Hat OpenShift.
With the Red Hat OpenShift interface, operations teams can gain clear visibility into resource use, capacity, and access. Developers can use automation to deploy test environments in minutes—a process that previously could take up to a week. Additionally, the bank has reduced its regression testing process from two weeks to just three days.
Poalim also worked closely with Red Hat Consulting before and during deployment for assistance with proof of concept testing, guidance for adopting DevOps workflows, and technical support. After a successful deployment, Poalim has now migrated its ATM management systems and the Bit platform to run on Red Hat OpenShift, with plans to migrate additional workloads and services in the future.
“We used to compare ourselves to what other banks were doing. Now, we no longer care, because we have the platform we need to choose our own path,” said Dani Sela, Tech Transformation Lead, Poalim Bank. “We can innovate, fail fast, embrace new technologies, and find our own way in this new era of banking.” Check out the full case study on how Red Hat technologies are helping Poalim Bank stay competitive.
