Kogito is a cloud-native business automation framework for building intelligent business applications. It is based on battle-tested runtime components (like Drools, jBPM, OptaPlanner), and it allows the development of process and business rules centric cloud-native applications for orchestrating distributed microservices and container-native applications. It takes advantage of the many benefits of the container-native platforms (like Kubernetes, OpenShift) as it was designed from the ground up for those platforms.

Some of the distinguishing characteristics of Kogito are as follows:

Cloud-first priority:

Kogito leverages Quarkus to run at scale on cloud infrastructure. As a result, one can get amazingly fast boot times and instant scaling on container orchestration platforms like Kubernetes or OpenShift.

Domain-specific flexibility:

Kogito adapts to specific business domains rather than the generic ones. This ensures that there is no more leaking of workflow tool-specific abstractions to the applications that interact with the workflows.

Developer centered experience:

Kogito offers a powerful developer experience (based on VSCode) that helps to achieve instant developer efficiency by having tooling that’s embeddable wherever it is required. Kogito tooling also takes care of the automated generation of code for at least 80% of the work and provides flexibility to customize and simplify the business automation application development with live reload functionalities.

The accompanying video shows some of the key capabilities of Kogito specifically on how it:

  • Provides runtime persistence for workflows to preserve the state of the process instances across restarts
  • Supports first-class citizen support for events and enables integration with third-party systems with both events and external REST API calls
  • Enables the tracking of the process instances progress from the Kogito process management console
  • Integrates with an OpenId Connect (OIDC) Server to provide security to the Kogito application endpoints
