In this month’s customer success highlights, learn how FIWARE, Electrical Training Alliance and SVA employed several Red Hat products to help build eco-smart city solutions, develop reusable microservices-based applications and construct a robust modern platform that meets strict compliance requirements.

FIWARE powers eco-smart cities in collaboration with the Red Hat Social Innovation Program

FIWARE is a non-profit organization headquartered in Berlin that uses open source technologies to develop smart solutions in solving global problems.

In 2022, FIWARE partnered with the Red Hat Social Innovation Program to help build a Smart City platform based on FIWARE open standards to improve livability and environmental sustainability.

Experts from Red Hat Open Innovation Labs, the FIWARE Foundation, and Human Oriented Products Ubiquitous (HOPU) collaborated over six weeks to assist with the implementation of a Smart City platform using Red Hat OpenShift.

While technology was the core component of the project, the collaboration and workflows between the three companies also needed to work together seamlessly.

The Open Innovation Labs team introduced open practices like impact mapping, event storming and pair programming to align the team toward shared goals, prioritize outcomes and integrate and improve the technical solution.

The collaboration between Red Hat, FIWARE and HOPU accelerated innovation through open source technology. FIWARE Smart Cities became an attainable, scalable solution that streamlines the developer experience.

Other entities—cities, individual contributors, integrators and tech companies—will be able to make contributions to the Smart Cities platform by adding their use cases, like artificial intelligence and machine learning components, that will help this solution evolve for the future.

Red Hat Managed Services Power Up ETA’s Application Development

Based in Maryland, Electrical Training Alliance (ETA) specializes in offering training to electrical workers, and supports them in achieving certification. It is the leading publisher of educational materials for the US electrical industry.

Directly supporting over 230 training programs, ETA's main strategy was to develop reusable microservices to centralize, integrate and speed up communication between training systems, providing a smoother experience to trainees, training centers and IT operations.

ETA engaged Red Hat Consulting and decided on a fully hosted and managed approach. It chose Red Hat OpenShift API Management to modernize its architecture, and Red Hat OpenShift Dedicated to allow their IT team to focus on application building rather than the migration process.

Red Hat teams oversee daily processes such as configuration, maintenance and upgrades, which allows ETA to modernize its systems, increase developer productivity and bring new applications to market faster.

SVA builds modern energy trading platform on Kubernetes

SVA System Vertrieb Alexander GmbH (SVA) is one of Germany’s leading IT service providers.

When one of its customers—a financial institution—wanted to modernize, it needed to provide a robust platform that also complied with industry regulations.

The new platform had to be architected in such a way that it allowed legacy applications to meet compliance when migrated, and the new platform also had to connect to numerous enterprise storage, hardware and software products.

The financial institution engaged SVA early in the project for its deep expertise in Red Hat OpenShift. After designing the modular solution, SVA helped roll out Red Hat OpenShift clusters across separate environments.

The SVA experts turned to Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform to automate the rollout of the solution they had designed. SVA wrote Ansible scripts for everything, from rolling out and configuring clusters to configuring storage and managing containers.

With the help of its strong partnership with Red Hat, SVA has built a robust platform with a decoupled container infrastructure that ensures the required separation of environments.
