Today, the Fedora Project is excited to announce the general availability of Fedora Linux 44, the latest version of the free and open source operating system. Learn more about the new and updated features of Fedora 44 below and don’t forget to ensure your system is fully up-to-date before upgrading from a previous release.
General highlights
Anaconda
Anaconda now only creates network profiles for devices configured during installation (by boot options, kickstart or interactively in UI) instead of providing default profiles for all devices. This change will simplify post-instal network configuration situations.
OpenSSL Cert File handling improvements
Loading time of OpenSSL has been improved by making use of directory-hash support for ca-certificates.
Ansible 13
Fedora 44 introduces Ansible 13. Take a look at the Ansible 13 porting guide and see if your existing playbooks need to be adjusted.
MariaDB version 11.8
MariaDB packages now use the versioned package layout – mariadb11.8. The distribution default unversioned mariadb packages now install the 11.8 versions in Fedora 44.
Wine NTSYNC
The NTSYNC kernel module is enabled for select packages by package recommendation (notably Wine and Steam), which can improve compatibility and performance when running Windows applications, especially games. Installing the winie-ntsync package ensures NTSYNC is configured automatically on subsequent boots, so users don’t have to manually enable NTSYNC.
Edition notes
Fedora Cloud
The /boot partition has been replaced with a btrfs subvolume for supporting Fedora Cloud images to provide improved space utilization and smaller images.
Workstation
Fedora Linux 44 Workstation ships with the latest GNOME release, GNOME 50. GNOME 50 provides your desktop with a long list of refinements, including accessibility, color management, and remote desktop. Many of the default Fedora Workstation applications have also seen improvements, such as document viewer, file manager and calendar. To learn more about these and other changes, check out the GNOME 50 release notes.
Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop 44
Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop 44 includes the latest Plasma 6.6. This version provides the new Plasma Login Manager and Plasma Setup for simpler installation, and a more cohesive and integrated experience from the moment the computer is powered on for the first time. Additionally, Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop Edition is now fully supported in Fedora Ready.
Fedora Linux 44 is available for download now. If you’re already running Fedora Linux, follow the easy upgrade instructions. For more information on the new features in Fedora Linux 44, see the release notes. If you run into a problem, visit the Ask Fedora user support forum, which includes a category for common issues.
Sull'autore
Jef Spaleta was an early contributor to fedora.us repo and Fedora Project. He was elected to the Fedora Board as an at-large community representative before life took him to Alaska ( and Antarctica!) to study the Aurora for several years. During those early years of Fedora, he was involved in much of the public discussions around the project’s shape and he was an ever-present voice in Fedora’s IRC channel, helping users and getting them started with constructively contributing. He also did a modest amount of Fedora packaging maintenance work. Now at Red Hat, Jef continues this work as Fedora Project Leader.
