Today the Fedora Project is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Fedora Linux 38 Beta, the latest version of the free and open source Fedora Linux operating system. Fedora Linux 38 Beta reflects the community’s desire for workstation, security and developer innovations. Users can look forward to the release of Fedora Linux 38 in late April.

Fedora 38 Beta release highlights

Fedora Workstation

Previous iterations of Fedora Workstation's third-party repository feature allowed users to enable a selection of software repos hosted by external organizations, including a filtered version of Flathub which provided access to a small number of Flathub applications. Fedora 38 Workstation Beta has removed this filtering, allowing users to enable a complete version of Flathub using the third-party repositories feature.

Additionally, Fedora 38 Workstation Beta now includes GNOME 44. Users can look forward to a new lock screen, a background apps section on the quick menu and improvements to accessibility settings.

Security features

The beta release also provides new security features. Packages are now built with stricter compiler flags that help protect against buffer overflows and the RPM package manager uses a Sequoia-based OpenPGP parser in place of its own implementation.

Other updates

Framer pointers are now built into official packages to improve developer experience for those looking to improve Linux application performance. Programming languages and libraries, including Ruby 3.2, GCC 13, LLVM 16, Goland 1.20 and PHP 8.2, have seen updates.

What’s next?

As this is a Beta release, we expect that you may encounter bugs or missing features. To report issues encountered during testing, contact the Fedora QA team via the test mailing list or in the #quality channel on Fedora Chat. As testing progresses, common issues are tracked in the common issues category on Ask Fedora. If you find a bug or issue, please take a look at how to file a bug.

For more technical information on new packages and improvements found in the Fedora Linux 38 Beta release, you can consult the Fedora Linux 38 change set.
