The release of Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform 7.1 (JBoss EAP) is now available. JBoss EAP is Red Hat’s middleware platform, built on open standards and compliant with the Java Enterprise Edition 7 specification, which includes a modular structure that provides service enabling only when required, improving startup speed, memory footprint and performance. Included in this minor release are a broad set of updates to existing features. In addition, the release provides new functionality in the areas of security, management, HA, and performance, such as a new additional security framework that unifies security across the entire application server, CLI and web console enhancements, and load balancing profile, respectively. Also included are additions to capabilities related to the simplification of components such as a new additional EJB Client library, HTTP/2 Support and the ability to replace the JSF implementation as well as the JBoss Server Migration Tool to migrate from previous versions of JBoss EAP to JBoss EAP 7.1. With these new capabilities, customers can continue to reduce maintenance time and effort, simplify security, and deliver applications faster and more frequently, all with improved efficiency.

Here are some highlights of the JBoss EAP 7.1 release:

Management

This release includes domain fault tolerance and JMX notification improvements like automatic reconnection of host controllers using a cached configuration to the domain controller, and the ability to register a listener to be notified of lifecycle server events using the core management subsystem or custom registration of JMX listeners. The ability to view/replace deployment artifacts without re-deployment of an archive, CLI enhancements, suspended-state server start and graceful shutdown, and web console enhancements are also included in the release.

HA/Performance

Among these features, the release includes HA clustered singleton MDBs, load balancing profile, and JCA distributed work manager. Also, a Performance Tuning Guide is included in the release.

Security

The Elytron subsystem is new in JBoss EAP 7.1. Elytron features in JBoss EAP 7.1 are based on the WildFly Elytron project, a security framework used to unify security across the entire application server. The Elytron subsystem enables a single point of configuration for securing both applications and the management interfaces. The Elytron subsystem exists in parallel with the legacy security subsystem and legacy core management authentication. Other security features include remoting security context propagation, more security standards support, centralized point for SSL/TLS configuration, credential stores, container-managed single sign-on, automatic self-signed certificate creation for applications, among others.

Component Simplification

JBoss EAP 7.1 includes EJB client simplifications, ability to replace the JSF implementation, batch job management (GUI support), transaction metrics for JMS and JCA resources, and ability to use absolute file system locations in modules. Moreover, graceful shutdown for transactions, enhanced transaction monitoring, and forget call when deleting a transaction are features included in the release.

Messaging

In JBoss EAP 7.1, you can now use JDBC to persist messages and binding data to a database. In addition, you can access an AMQ broker using the Integrated ActiveMQ Artemis Resource Adapter.

Modern Web Applications

Red Hat JBoss EAP 7.1 supports HTTP/2 for modern web application development.

New and Updated Quickstarts

Red Hat JBoss EAP 7.1 includes new quickstarts for a highly available cluster-wide singleton, a clustered messaging singleton, and for securing applications using Elytron. Updates to some of the Elytron security quickstarts are also included.
