Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization, included in Red Hat OpenShift, provides a modern platform for you to run and deploy your new and existing virtual machine (VM) workloads. You may run Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS, and other third-party operating system guests on OpenShift Virtualization.

In layman's terms, OpenShift Virtualization runs VMs inside of pods on a namespace on a cluster. Since VMs will be running on a multitenant platform (Red Hat OpenShift), you may want to take advantage of showback and chargeback capabilities of OpenShift Virtualization VMs.

The cost management service in Red Hat Insights has recently gained support for tracking OpenShift Virtualization, giving customers the ability to track costs directly associated with virtual machines running within their OpenShift clusters. Cost management will now gather information specifically for each VM running in Red Hat OpenShift and associate related costs to it at a monthly aggregate level.

This feature includes a new API endpoint (/api/cost-management/v1/reports/openshift/resources/virtual-machines/) and an additional “Virtualization” tab on the  OpenShift details page in cost management. It can be found when you drill down into a specific cluster/node/project. Both the UI and API will present the latest details of a running VM and its month-to-date running costs.

We have released a preview of the cost of OpenShift Virtualization VMs. In this preview, CPU and memory costs are distributed to the VMs. Work is underway to also account for the costs of storage, networking and overhead (e.g., control plane, unallocated capacity and projects regarded by the user as cross-services).

Add your OpenShift clusters to Red Hat Insights cost management now and calculate your OpenShift Virtualization costs in the Red Hat Hybrid Cloud Console.
