The decision to migrate from a familiar virtualization provider to a modern platform is significant. For many organizations, the biggest hurdle isn't necessarily the migration itself, but the uncertainty that precedes it. You need to know exactly what the migration process looks like, what risk is involved, which workloads are ready, and more before you commit your resources.
The OpenShift migration advisor is a no-cost, self-service tool designed to evaluate the migration-readiness of your VMware workloads prior to commitment. By discovering your vCenter environment, the advisor generates an automated report that provides the technical detail you need to plan your journey with confidence. With the OpenShift migration advisor, you can assess your VM workload migration path as you plan your move to Red Hat OpenShift.
Self-service experience without the commitment
What makes this tool unique is that the OpenShift migration advisor is available to anyone with a Red Hat account on console.redhat.com. You do not need a paid Red Hat subscription to access the tool, making it a frictionless starting point for you to evaluate your virtualization options. While the tool is currently focused on VMware workload, we're continuing to evolve its functionality as it matures.
There are two ways you can create a new assessment. The first is by uploading an inventory file through RVTools, a free, lightweight DELL Windows application used to manage, monitor, and audit VMWare vSphere environments. The second method is by importing and deploying an Open Virtualization Appliance (OVA) VM agent directly in your VMware environment to capture information and share details of VMs in vCenter. Once connected and data sharing is enabled, you can generate a full report with migration recommendations in the Red Hat Console. The OpenShift migration advisor’s self-service experience allows you to choose the method that fits your security requirements and connect to your environment instantly for evaluation.
Map your migration path with automated, data-driven insights
While many IT teams use RVTools for raw inventory, the OpenShift migration advisor goes a step further by providing a data-driven analysis to determine actual migration readiness to Red Hat OpenShift.
After connecting to your individual VMware vSphere environments, the tool generates a comprehensive report that includes:
- Existing cluster information: A clear snapshot of your connected VMware clusters including CPU and memory, disks, networks, and more.
- Migration warnings: Identification of potential obstacles that could slow down your migration process such as specific late model hardware configurations or OS versions.
- Recommendations: Technical architecture guidance on how your workloads should be configured in a Red Hat OpenShift environment and estimated migration times based on your specific applications.
By identifying these factors early, you can address technical requirements before your actual migration begins for a predictable, low-risk path to OpenShift Virtualization.
Choose your migration path
The OpenShift migration advisor is specifically designed for users and partners evaluating OpenShift Virtualization. It is highly effective for those who need a straightforward, automated report to inform a migration decision.
However, identifying readiness is just the beginning. Successful migrations to new platforms oftentimes require skilled resources to augment your existing team. For larger, more complex migrations, gain hands-on support through Red Hat Consulting, our ecosystem of Red Hat Specialized Partners, or the Virtualization Migration Assessment to access expert-led roadmaps that move beyond automated insights.
Whether you are looking for a quick, automated evaluation or a deep-dive professional assessment, Red Hat provides the tools you need to ensure your VM migration is predictable and successful.
