As we gear up for the anniversary of the original release of Red Hat Linux on October 31st, Red Hatters all around the globe are celebrating We Are Red Hat Week this week. It is our annual celebration of all the things that make Red Hat, Red Hat: our brand, our culture, and, most of all, our people!

In preparation for this week, we asked folks to share their favorite part about working at Red Hat. Many responses talked about how our foundational and organization-wide commitment to open source—in our code, our support for upstream projects, our way of operating, and our culture—is their favorite part of working at Red Hat. Here are just a few of the stories Red Hatters shared.

"The commitment to open. Leading in the open source way with courage, commitment and accountability and having the freedom and support to do that." — Rebecca L., Program Management

"Many passionate open source community leaders are just an email away. It's easy to connect with them and just chat, work together or find a mentor." — Mirek Z., Engineering

"When I was learning about computers as a hobbyist and a student, I gained experience using many of the open source projects that Red Hat supports. Now I get to work with that software every day for my job!" — Ryan G.

"I am able to guarantee that one of the world's most mission-critical pieces of software, the Java language runtime, is available for everyone to use, debug, develop and enhance freely without having to pay anyone or sign any restrictive contracts." — Andrew D., Engineering

"The liberty of working the way I want, using the open source tools I like (I love Fedora!), fixing products made from open source projects. We're really improving the world by working on open source, it benefits everyone!" — Carl M., Support

"I LOVE collaborating with a global team on open source while also being fully remote and productive all the way!" — Daniel H., Engineering

"Red Hat's evangelical enthusiasm for open source." — Max W., Engineering

"It is open source. It is inclusive. It respects its workers. It is Red Hat." — Sergio A., Engineering

"Open source is one of the most powerful expressions of collective intelligence there is, and it is right here at Red Hat." — Paul V., Engineering
