The Kube By Example (KBE) learning community recently expanded its curriculum to include guides and resources for developers looking to better understand the Argo CD and Tekton open source projects, and apply the technologies into their daily lives.
Like other KBE learning paths, these resources have been created and contributed by members of the broader Kubernetes community. In addition to the new courses, the site now features a community contributors page where users can learn more about — and interact with — their favorite Kube By Example instructors and KBE Insider guests. These instructors represent some of the best and brightest minds in the industry, and have volunteered their time and talent to teach others about Kubernetes and its vast ecosystem of technologies.
Argo CD and Tekton are two important technologies that developers may encounter when building their application pipelines. These technologies are often used together to create modern, repeatable, and efficient continuous integration, delivery and deployment (CI/CD) workflows for hybrid, multi-cluster Kubernetes environments.
Founded by Intuit in 2018, the Argo CD project was born out of a need for a declarative deployment tool that could make it easier to manage configurations, definitions and environments for both Kubernetes and the applications it hosts using GitOps as the source of truth. The project has grown in popularity as a means of simplifying the process of running applications in Kubernetes, improving security and increasing developer productivity, and is now part of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF).
The Argo CD learning path introduces the technology and provides context for when, where and how a developer can use it, walking users through the process of getting started, deploying an application, and working with various other Kubernetes-native tools to get the most out of it.
The Tekton project followed a similar path as Argo CD. Originally called Knative Build, the technology was created to help developers build application code natively on a Kubernetes cluster using a set of standardized templates. These templates provide a consistent, portable and repeatable approach to building container images on Kubernetes, reducing both time and complexity. Tekton is part of the Continuous Delivery Foundation where the community continues to thrive and nurture the technology.
The Tekton learning path offered by Kube By Example provides a thorough explanation of continuous integration, continuous development and continuous deployment. The path not only defines the terms, but also covers how and why they are often used interchangeably. Users will be able to explore the benefits of these capabilities, how Tekton fulfills CI/CD, and how the technology enables the business to deliver better products.
