We’re pleased to announce today that the second version of the Red Hat Container Development Kit (CDK) is now available in beta. The CDK is designed to simplify the configuration and setup of Linux container development environments and provides an on-ramp to building container-based applications. By using Vagrant, open source software to create, configure and deploy virtual environments, the CDK enables developers across Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux operating systems to more quickly create containerized applications for deployment on Red Hat certified container hosts, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Red Hat Enterprise Linux Atomic Host, and OpenShift Enterprise 3.

From converting existing applications into simple, one-container deployments or developing microservices architecture-based multi-container applications, the CDK provides the tools and documentation that developers need to get started. This includes access to Red Hat Software Collections images of many of the latest, stable open source languages, databases and web development tools via the Red Hat Container Registry, as well a Red Hat Developer Toolset image for developers seeking to create container-based applications built via the GNU Compiler Collection (GCC) tools.

New additions and enhancements to the Red Hat CDK 2 include:

  • Support for the Nulecule specification, which offers a defined pattern and model for packaging complex, multi-container applications along with dependency references and orchestration metadata in a container image for building, deploying, monitoring and active management.

  • Atomic App, Red Hat’s reference implementation of the Nulecule specification, packaged as a container for accelerated container development.

  • Image Factory, a tool for importing and converting disk images (like virtual machine images) into Docker base images, complete with the appropriate metadata.

  • Support for additional hypervisors including VMware.

The Red Hat Container Development Kit 2 beta is available now to customers and partners with select, active Red Hat Enterprise Linux Developer subscriptions and to partners who have joined the Red Hat Connect for Technology Partners program.
