The business impact of mission critical automation

In a recent survey, Harvard Business Review found that 80% of respondents said, "Adopting IT automation is 'extremely or very important' to the future success of their organization." But IT automation—the automation of everyday tasks that concern IT systems—may seem a long way down the “value chain” from generative AI, cloud and other much more headline-grabbing developments that promise to have a major impact on organizations, whatever sector they are in. So why should you care?

"Cold start" fast flow - using external suppliers to bootstrap a nimble, flow-centric organization

The challenge: how can we “cold start” an organization with limited digital delivery capability with a hiring freeze and turn it into a beacon of excellence in digital services? Many traditional organizations have been slow to see the importance of building a sustained capability around digital delivery and are now scrambling to catch up to challenger startups and scale-ups that are slowly but steadily eating their market share. It’s particularly challenging when the organization has a hiring freeze in place to keep costs down, because this limits the speed with which new capabilities can be acquired and strengthened. However, by using principles and practices from both Team Topologies and Adapt Together:tm:, it’s advantageous to “cold start” a digital delivery capability in such organizations by using external suppliers that use commercial agreements, delivery practices, and partner relationships that amplify fast flow and cross-organizational learning and alignment. In this talk, Matthew Skelton - co-author of ‘Team Topologies’ and originator of Adapt Together:tm: - shares how a blend of external suppliers and in-house staff can provide a advantage over purely home-grown talent as the organization builds its “digital muscles”; by taking advantage of the natural boundaries between suppliers, a flow-centric architecture can emerge more quickly.

How Quarkus makes your apps cheaper, greener, and happier

Java never went away, but it’s having a renaissance. After some initial teething pains on the cloud (too big, too slow, too hard to configure) a new breed of Java frameworks are changing everything. In this talk, Holly will introduce Quarkus and then delve into some of the advanced features you might not know about. She’ll cover native binaries, what makes Quarkus super-fast running on the JVM, TDD with Quarkus, and Quarkus’s carbon footprint. The talk includes some theory (what underpins Quarkus’s surprising speed?) and also live demos (does Quarkus really start faster than a light bulb? What does an integration testing flow with Quarkus look like?)

Bank in a box: High-performance trading systems with multisite self-healing using Red Hat OpenShift

Join this session to learn how the High Performance Architecture (HPA) team at Citigroup Global Markets is delivering the next generation of its trading systems with multi-site self-healing using Red Hat OpenShift. With its new bank-in-a-box HPA solution, Citigroup Global Markets can quickly and reliably develop, deploy, and manage applications across teams, projects, and IT environments. Based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat OpenShift, the new HPA solution integrates data, business logic, and interfaces in a single environment. Red Hat OpenShift provides automated operations, consistent experiences, and self-service provisioning to help teams work together more efficiently as they move ideas from development to production. It also minimizes risks to bank and customer information, as transaction data travels through shared container memory rather than from server to server across the network fabric.
